Etsy Identity Verification Rejected and How to Resubmit

By July 3, 2026November 2nd, 2026No Comments24 min read

An Etsy identity verification rejected notice means Etsy, or its verification partner Persona, could not match what you sent to the details on your account. Etsy’s help center sets four conditions for an ID copy. It must show your full name, date of birth and expiration date. The name must be in Latin characters. The details must correspond with what you entered during shop setup. The image must be clear, legible and unaltered. Miss any one of them and Etsy may ask for another copy, by email and through a prompt in Shop Manager. For selfie checks, Etsy states that failing the verification process multiple times may leave you unable to onboard with Etsy at this time. So the fix is almost never a better photo of the same document. Find the exact field that failed, correct the account or switch the document, and send one clean submission. Each rejection reason below is paired with the change that answers it, followed by the escalation routes Etsy documents and the point where you stop and plan.

Etsy Identity Verification Rejected and What Failed

Etsy does not always say which field failed. For business details, its help article states that Etsy is legally unable to share what specific information is unverifiable. You work it out from the criteria Etsy publishes and from your own records. When sellers tell us Etsy identity verification is not working, nearly every case traces to one of the five groups that follow.

Mismatch between the ID and the account

  • Name. The account shows a nickname, a married name or a business name where the ID shows a different legal name. Etsy requires the information on the document to correspond with the information provided during shop setup.
  • Date of birth. A typo, or day and month reversed, is enough.
  • Taxpayer name. Etsy’s identity article states the name on your ID and your taxpayer address must match. The street address on the ID can differ from your taxpayer address without failing the check.
  • Bank account name. Etsy’s checklist for a failed upload asks whether the name on the ID matches the name on the bank account you shared. A deposit account held in a spouse’s name or a trading name creates a second mismatch.

Document problems

  • Expired ID. The copy must show the expiration date, and an expired document undermines the check.
  • Missing back. If your date of birth or expiration date is on the back, Etsy requires both sides.
  • Non-Latin name. Etsy requires the name on the ID to be in Latin characters. An ID that shows the name only in another script will not meet the criterion.
  • Unaccepted document type. Etsy lists accepted IDs by country, and the list may include driver’s licenses, state IDs, passports and permanent resident cards. A document outside that list, such as a student card or a work badge, fails before anyone reads it.

Image problems

  • Blur, glare or shadow over the name, date of birth or photo.
  • Edges cut off, or fingers covering text.
  • Filters, edits or compression artifacts. Etsy requires images that are unaltered.
  • A screenshot or a photo of a screen.

Selfie problems

Outside the EEA and UK, Persona compares biometric identifiers from your selfie with the photo on your ID. Etsy states that if the selfie does not match the ID, you may be asked to resubmit with a different selfie. Harsh side lighting, a cap or glasses covering part of the face, or an ID photo taken fifteen years ago are the usual reasons the comparison misses. Persona stores that biometric data for no longer than one year, and Etsy keeps the selfie and ID image for up to 6 years after the shop closes.

Business detail problems

  • Entity name entered differently from the registration document.
  • Wrong business identification number, or the number from a different registry.
  • An owner with 25 percent or more of the business capital left off the list of Ultimate Beneficial Owners.
  • Registered address entered as a trading address.
  • A registration extract older than three months, where the country table in Etsy’s help article requires a recent one.

Why Etsy Asks for Another Copy of Your ID

When Etsy is asking for ID again, the first copy usually missed a criterion. Etsy’s help article states that if any of the ID criteria are not met, Etsy may request another copy, by email to the address on file for your shop and through a prompt in Shop Manager. Check the spam folder too. Etsy’s reinstatement article tells sellers to look there for the message that explains what is needed.

Requests on established shops

Sellers who verified years ago are often surprised to be asked again. Section 5B of the Etsy Payments Policy states that sellers authorize Etsy and its service providers to verify their information at registration and from time to time while using the Services, including by accessing public records and obtaining credit reports. Etsy gives the reasons as safeguarding the marketplace and reducing the risk of fraud, money laundering, terrorist financing and violations of trade sanctions. Section 5A adds that Etsy may refuse access to the Services until the information is provided and that account functionality may be limited without it. A periodic request does not mean Etsy suspects you. An expired ID on file, or a name change you never updated, is enough to fail it.

Requests tied to a legal deadline

Some requests come under Etsy’s seller information confirmation process. Etsy names the laws behind it as the INFORM Consumers Act, the Digital Services Act, DAC7, the Canadian Reporting Rules for Digital Platform Operators and the UK Model Rules for Reporting by Platform Operators. The thresholds Etsy publishes are specific.

  • INFORM Consumers Act. 200 or more US sales totaling over 5,000 USD in any 12 consecutive months within the last 24 months. The information must be reviewed annually.
  • DAC7. EU sellers with 30 or more sales or 2,000 EUR or more in the past year.
  • Digital Services Act. Professional sellers who sell to EU or EEA buyers, meaning sellers enrolled as a business, incorporated, or set to trader status.
  • Business address display. Registered businesses with over 20,000 USD in sales in 12 consecutive months, where the business address differs from the home address.

Etsy states these deadlines are mandated by law and that it cannot grant extensions. Miss one and you cannot receive funds, and the shop may be placed in Etsy-initiated vacation mode that you cannot exit until the steps are done. Listings stop appearing in search and ads pause. If the steps are not completed within 90 days of the deadline, the shop is closed. A reopened shop stays in vacation mode until verified, and it closes again if it is still unconfirmed after another 90 days.

Why Etsy will not tell you exactly what failed

Etsy says it is legally unable to share which business detail failed. Telling an applicant which field tripped the check would also coach someone using false details. Make every field agree with your documents and it stops mattering which one failed.

The law behind the requests, by region

The table sets out the statutes Etsy’s verification requests answer to in each region, as general information rather than advice on a specific shop.

RegionLawEffect on verification
United StatesINFORM Consumers Act, 15 U.S.C. 45fA high-volume seller has at least 200 sales and 5,000 USD in gross revenue in a continuous 12-month period within the previous 24 months. The marketplace must collect and verify the seller’s information within 10 days, remind sellers at least once a year, and suspend future sales after notice and at least 10 days to respond.
United StatesFinCEN Customer Due Diligence rule, 31 C.F.R. 1010.230Covered financial institutions identify beneficial owners at 25 percent or more and one control person. Etsy’s 25 percent owner threshold mirrors this industry standard.
European Union (EU stores)Digital Services Act, Regulation (EU) 2022/2065, Article 30, and DAC7, Council Directive (EU) 2021/514Trader information must be collected and verified with best efforts. DAC7 requires reporting seller details to tax authorities.
United KingdomThe Platform Operators (Due Diligence and Reporting Requirements) Regulations 2023, SI 2023/817Platforms carry out due diligence on sellers for reporting to HMRC.

If a confirmation deadline has already passed and funds are frozen, our Etsy suspension team can check every field against your documents before the 90-day closure point.

What to Change Before the Next Submission

Because repeated failures can block onboarding, the first question we ask is exactly what failed on the last attempt. Resubmitting the same document with a different crop is the most common mistake we see. Our position is that your information is accurate and the failure was a correctable document issue. The root cause names the exact field or document, whether name, date of birth, address or image quality. The corrective step is a clear, unaltered resubmission that matches exactly. The preventive step is one consistent legal identity across shop, payment and tax records.

Step 1. Reconstruct the last attempt

Write down what you sent, including which ID, which side, which photo, which selfie and which business details. Then write down what the account showed at that moment, including legal name, date of birth, address, taxpayer name and bank account name. Most rejections become obvious once the two lists sit side by side.

Step 2. Fix the records first

If a field on the account is wrong, correct it before you submit anything. Etsy’s Persona article notes that changing certain details, such as your name, may require verifying again. That is expected. Make the change once and make it correct.

Step 3. Choose the document that matches

If your passport and driver’s license show different names, use the one that matches the account and the bank account. If your national ID shows your name only in a non-Latin script, a passport usually shows it in Latin characters. If your ID expires soon, renew it first if you can.

Step 4. Retake the images

Photograph the ID on a flat, dark surface in even light. Keep all four edges in frame. Avoid glare across the photo or the name. Include the back if your date of birth or expiration date is there. Do not edit, filter or crop content out. For the selfie, face the camera, remove anything covering your face, and follow Persona’s prompts to hold still or turn slowly.

Step 5. Choose non-biometric review where offered

In the EEA and UK, Etsy’s Persona article lets you choose biometric or non-biometric verification. Biometric checks compare facial geometry automatically and need your explicit consent. Non-biometric checks are done by a support agent who reviews the selfie and ID by hand, and Etsy says that usually takes longer. If the automated comparison keeps missing on an older ID photo, the slower manual route is worth the wait.

Step 6. Reconcile business details

Enter the entity name, business identification number, registered address and jurisdiction exactly as they appear on your registration document. Name each Ultimate Beneficial Owner on the form. In the US, Etsy allows up to 3 additional owners, and each must hold at least a 25 percent stake. Where your country requires registration proof dated within the last three months, order a fresh extract before you upload.

Resubmission checklist of documents Etsy accepts
  • A current driver’s license, government-issued photo ID or passport, or another ID on Etsy’s accepted list for your country, such as a state ID or permanent resident card.
  • Both sides of the ID if the name, date of birth or expiration date appear on the back.
  • Name in Latin characters, matching the account, the taxpayer details and the bank account name.
  • Date of birth matching the account.
  • Clear, legible, unaltered images with all edges visible.
  • A live selfie taken through Persona, face fully visible.
  • For a business, record the entity name, legal business address, business identification number, EIN in the US, jurisdiction where required, and every owner with 25 percent or more.
  • For a business, if Etsy asks, provide the government-issued business document listed for your country, dated within three months where the table requires it.

A composite example of a business rejection

The scenario below is a generic composite of a common pattern. It does not describe any one client. Two partners form a limited liability company to sell ceramics. One partner sets up the shop, enrolls as a business, types the company’s trading name in the entity name field and lists herself as the only owner. The registration document shows a longer legal name, and each partner owns half. Etsy emails that it cannot verify the business information. She re-enters the same details. Etsy then asks for a government-issued business document, which shows a name and an ownership structure that do not match anything on the account.

The case is fixable, but only in the right order. First, the entity name is entered exactly as registered, including any suffix. Second, the second partner is added as an Ultimate Beneficial Owner, because she holds at least 25 percent. Third, the registered address replaces the studio address in the legal business address field. Only then is the registration document uploaded. The document never changed. The account was brought into line with it.

The note that goes with a resubmission

Where Etsy gives you a place to explain, or you are writing to Etsy Support or replying to a suspension email, keep the note short and structured. We use the same order every time.

  1. The request and the position. Name the request you are answering and state that your information is accurate and the earlier failure was a correctable document issue.
  2. Root cause. Name the exact field, for example the account showed a different name from the ID, the date of birth was entered incorrectly, the back of the ID was missing, or the entity name did not match the registration.
  3. Correction. State what you changed and when, and that the attached documents now match the account exactly.
  4. Prevention. State that you keep one legal identity across shop, payment and tax records and a folder of current documents.
  5. Evidence. List the documents attached, such as ID front and back, business registration, owner list, and proof of address where asked.
  6. One request. Ask that verification be completed and access restored.

Do not argue tone, plead hardship or blame the verification system. Reviewers reward a specific, owned answer, and they read blame as a sign the problem will come back.

Business models where rejections cluster

New sellers whose ID name differs from the shop or payment account name. Use the legal name exactly as it appears on the ID across the shop, the payment account and the bank account.

Business sellers with owners or controllers not disclosed. Have the registration documents and owner details ready before onboarding and list every qualifying owner.

Sellers uploading cropped, expired or low-quality images. Upload clear, in-date, uncropped documents, and keep a folder of current documents for the periodic re-checks Etsy runs.

Escalation Paths Etsy Documents

Etsy documents several routes, and which one applies depends on where you are in the process and where you live.

Etsy ID verification rejected routes: resubmit, Etsy Support, EEA and UK appeal, suspension reply, Appeals Center
Five routes Etsy documents after a rejected identity check, from a corrected resubmission to the Appeals Center, with the reviewer and the evidence each one expects.

Resubmit through the request

The first route is the request itself. Etsy sends it by email and shows a banner on the Shop Manager dashboard. Answer it with a corrected submission, and only once the records behind it are fixed.

Contact Etsy Support

If you cannot complete the request, for example because none of your IDs meet the criteria, contact Etsy Support through the help center before you try again. Explain the constraint plainly and ask which document Etsy will accept.

Appeal a denied verification in the EEA and UK

Etsy’s Persona article lists a right to appeal in the section on EEA and UK sellers. If verification is denied, you appeal by contacting Etsy through the methods the article lists. The same section gives you the right to withdraw biometric consent at any time and choose non-biometric verification instead, which takes the automated decision out of the loop.

For a temporary suspension, reply to the email

If verification problems lead to a suspension, Etsy’s reinstatement article states that the account may be suspended until Etsy can verify your information. Etsy’s appeal article states that if you received an email saying your account is suspended and asking you to reply when the problem is resolved, the suspension is temporary and the best way to communicate is to reply to that email.

For a permanent suspension, use the Appeals Center

A permanent suspension email carries the words permanently suspended in both the subject line and the body. The appeal window closes 6 months after the suspension date, and a missed window cannot be reopened. A specialist reviews the appeal and your account history and replies by email, which can take up to two weeks. If the specialist decides the account stays closed, Etsy will not consider it for reinstatement again. Our guide to the Etsy permanent suspension appeal covers that filing in depth.

EU and UK statutory routes

Sellers based in the EU who sell to EU consumers can use Etsy’s free internal complaint-handling system under Regulation (EU) 2019/1150, which covers how Etsy handled a restriction, suspension or termination. If the complaint is not resolved, they can request mediation through CEDR, the mediator Etsy appointed, and Etsy pays the upfront costs. Section 12 of Etsy’s Terms states that users covered by the Digital Services Act can appeal account decisions directly with Etsy and may be able to use a certified out-of-court dispute settlement body. In the UK, Article 4 of the Platform-to-Business Regulation as retained in UK law requires a statement of reasons on a durable medium for a restriction or suspension. Termination needs at least 30 days’ notice. That notice can be cut only for a legal or regulatory obligation, an imperative reason under the law, or repeated breaches of the terms.

What Never to Send in a Follow Up

  • An edited document. Etsy requires images that are unaltered. Correcting a typo on the image instead of on the account turns a mismatch into false information, which Section 4B of the Terms of Use prohibits.
  • Someone else’s ID. The verified person must be the account holder. Section 4B also bars impersonating another person or company through your account.
  • The same document with a new crop. If the cause was the data, a new image changes nothing and adds a failed attempt.
  • A stack of every document you own. Send what the request asks for. Extra documents with different addresses or name variants create new mismatches.
  • A screenshot or a photo of a screen. Photograph the physical document.
  • Several submissions in quick succession. Etsy states that failing multiple times may leave you unable to onboard. Each rushed attempt is one you may not get back.
  • A complaint in place of the documents. Frustration in a support message does not verify anyone. A short, precise note with the correct documents does.

When to Stop and Plan the Next Move

Stop before the next attempt if any of these are true.

  • You have failed more than once and cannot name the cause of each failure.
  • None of your IDs meet Etsy’s criteria, for example because none shows your name in Latin characters or all are expired.
  • Your legal name differs across your ID, tax records and bank account, and you cannot align them quickly.
  • Your business registration and ownership records do not match what you entered.
  • Etsy has told you that you cannot onboard at this time.

In those situations, the next move is to fix the underlying records, whether that means renewing an ID, aligning your bank account name, updating tax records, or correcting the business registration. Then make one submission. If Etsy has already said you cannot onboard, read our guide on repeated failed verification and a blocked onboarding before doing anything else. Do not open a new account to try again. Etsy’s Persona article states it keeps biometric data for up to one year to identify and block people who try to create multiple accounts.

First rejection compared with a repeat rejection

A first rejection is routine. Read the criteria, fix the field and resubmit. A second Etsy verification rejected message means the diagnosis was wrong, so widen it and audit every field on the account against every document. A third failure is where we usually see sellers lose the option entirely. Etsy publishes no attempt limit, so plan the second submission as if it were the last.

For the broader picture, our core guide to Etsy identity verification explains when Etsy verifies and why access is limited, and our guides to an Etsy shop suspended notice and a shop under review cover what follows if verification stalls.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did Etsy reject my ID verification?

Etsy may request another copy of ID or business documents when what was sent cannot be verified, so resubmit clear, current documents that match your account details. The usual causes are a name or date of birth that differs from the account, an expired ID, a missing back side, a non-Latin name, an unclear image or a selfie that did not match.

Can I appeal a denied Etsy identity verification?

Yes, Etsy’s Persona article states that a seller whose verification is denied can contact Etsy to appeal. If the denial has already turned into a permanent suspension, the route changes to the Appeals Center, which closes 6 months after the suspension date and allows one specialist review.

Is an Etsy identity verification rejection final?

A rejected verification attempt is usually not final, because Etsy may ask for another copy of your ID. What is final is a specialist’s decision on an appeal of a permanent suspension, and Etsy states that failing verification multiple times may leave you unable to onboard.

Should I fix my Etsy account or my ID photo before resubmitting?

Fix the account first, because most rejections come from data that does not match, not from image quality. Align the legal name, date of birth, taxpayer name and bank account name, pick the ID that matches them, and only then retake the photos.

Why does Etsy keep asking for my ID again after I already verified?

Section 5B of the Etsy Payments Policy lets Etsy verify seller information at registration and from time to time afterwards. INFORM sellers also review their details annually. Keep one legal identity across shop, payment and tax records, renew IDs before they expire, and hold current copies in one folder.
