Etsy deposits on hold means Etsy has stopped some or all of your Etsy Payments funds from moving to your bank for a reason tied to risk, a legal requirement or an unfinished step on your account. The Etsy Payments Policy allows a hold on all deposits, or on the funds for a transaction, when there is a significant dispute or investigation related to the account or order. That hold lasts for the shorter of 180 days after the estimated delivery date or the completion of any investigation into the seller’s actions. Sellers often call this an Etsy payout hold. Separately, Etsy can apply a deposit delay of between 0 and 180 days across all of a seller’s transactions. The current Payments Policy text was last updated on Jul 31, 2026. Deposits can also wait on verification, such as a bank account that has not been verified, seller information that has not been confirmed, or a suspension that has not been resolved. The 180-day outer limit decides every hold case, so the first question is always whether the investigation has ended or the 180 days have passed.
What an Etsy Deposit Hold Is
Etsy uses three tools to manage money in a seller’s Payment account, which are reserves, holds and deposit delays. The Etsy Payments Policy describes them together under the heading Reserves, Holds and Delays, and says Etsy may instruct its payment partners to take account-level or transaction-level actions based on risk-based criteria. Each works differently.
| Tool | What it does | Time limit in the Payments Policy |
|---|---|---|
| Reserve | Holds a percentage of sales for a set period on a rolling basis | Set per account. A variable reserve can be deducted for up to 90 days or delay funds for up to 180 days. |
| Hold | Stops all deposits, or the funds for a transaction, during a significant dispute or investigation | The shorter of 180 days after the estimated delivery date or completion of the investigation |
| Deposit delay | Sets the number of days between a sale and the day its net amount becomes available | Between 0 and 180 days, applied across all transactions |
Etsy’s reserve help page says that for most sellers a reserve is removed within 90 days, and that Etsy Support agents cannot remove one. Reserves have their own rules, covered in our guide to the Etsy payment account reserve.
When the policy allows a hold
The Payments Policy sets out the grounds. Etsy may put a hold or deposit delay on the seller’s balance, in addition to any reserve and in its sole discretion. It does so if it believes a seller’s actions may result in buyer disputes, chargebacks, increased risk of fraud, counterfeiting or other claims, or if applicable law requires it. The hold can extend to any accounts Etsy determines are related to yours. Etsy says it will do its best to communicate with the affected seller as soon as it can.
The policy also notes a different kind of delay that has nothing to do with your conduct. Deposits can be temporarily delayed by an issue at Etsy, at its third-party providers or at your bank. The policy adds that Etsy is not obligated to refund fees or reimburse expenses caused by holds or delayed deposits.
Where you see it
A hold or delay shows up in your Payment account. Deposit delays are reflected as a number of days in each seller’s Payment account. Etsy’s deposit help page lists the common reasons funds have not arrived. They are funds not yet scheduled to deposit, fees greater than sales, no valid card on file, no valid bank account, a recently updated bank account, a reserve, or seller information that needs confirming. Check each before assuming a hold, because several of these clear on their own.
Disputes and Investigations
The hold that worries sellers most is the one tied to a significant dispute or investigation. The policy wording is precise. A hold may be put on all deposits from an account, or on the funds associated with a transaction, if there is a significant dispute or investigation related to the account or order. It runs for the shorter of two periods.
- 180 days after the estimated delivery date, or
- completion of any investigation regarding the seller’s actions.
Whichever comes first ends the hold. If the investigation closes on day 40, the hold should end on day 40. If the investigation is still open at day 180 after the estimated delivery date, the 180-day limit is reached. For that reason the estimated delivery date of each held order matters. It sets the outer clock.
What counts as a dispute
Etsy’s policy groups disputes with chargebacks and claims. In practice the common sources are buyer cases opened through Etsy, chargebacks filed through a buyer’s card issuer, and complaints that raise fraud or counterfeiting concerns. A single small case rarely produces an account-level hold. A cluster of cases, a large chargeback, or a rights owner or fraud concern can.
What counts as an investigation
Etsy does not publish an investigation procedure for holds. The policy ties the hold to an investigation regarding the seller’s actions, and the risk factors elsewhere in the policy show what Etsy reviews, including order backlog, tracking, case ratios, delivery times and past warnings. If your notice mentions a review or investigation, the facts that end it are usually the same facts that resolve the underlying cases, which are tracking, delivery confirmation and buyer messages.
Order-level and account-level holds
A transaction-level hold affects the funds for the disputed order. An account-level hold affects all deposits. Your Payment account and any notice from Etsy show which applies. The difference matters for cash flow and for your response. An order-level hold clears when that order’s dispute closes. An account-level hold needs the investigation closed or the 180-day limit reached.
Building the dispute response file
An investigation ends faster when the reviewer has everything in one place. For every order tied to the hold, we build a one-page file with five items. The order record shows the item, price, buyer location and the processing time promised. The shipping record shows the carrier, tracking number, first scan date and delivery confirmation. The message thread shows every exchange with the buyer, including any delay notice sent before the estimated date. The listing record shows the photos and description the buyer saw at purchase. The resolution record shows any refund issued or the outcome of the case.
Two habits make the file stronger. First, keep the estimated delivery date visible on every page, because it sets the 180-day clock. Second, sort the orders by status into resolved, open with evidence of delivery, and open with a genuine problem. The third group is where your refunds should go first. A seller who refunds genuine problems quickly and documents delivery on the rest has shown Etsy the remaining liability is small, which is exactly what a hold is meant to measure.
Avoid two mistakes while a dispute hold runs. Do not cancel open orders to shrink exposure, because canceled orders can still generate cases and buyers rarely see a cancellation as service. And do not contact the buyer outside Etsy’s messages to settle a case privately. Etsy’s records are what the reviewer reads, and a settlement Etsy cannot see does not close the case.

When an account-level hold sits on top of open cases you cannot close alone, our Etsy suspension specialists can sort the order files and draft the dispute responses with you.
Suspensions and Verification Gaps
Some holds have nothing to do with disputes. They come from missing steps on the account, and they are often the fastest to clear.
Bank verification
Etsy’s bank verification page says Etsy requires you to verify your bank account details to continue receiving deposits. US accounts verify through Plaid. Non-US accounts verify with a small test deposit or a bank document, and Etsy usually gives non-US sellers 30 days to begin verification and 60 days to complete it after the first sale. Missing that deadline can lead to suspension. A bank document review takes approximately 5 to 7 business days, and the document must be dated within the last 6 months.
Changing banks adds its own wait. The same page says that if you change your bank account details entirely, funds from your sales are not eligible for deposit for 5 business days. Etsy’s deposit help page describes it as funds deposited from 5 days after Etsy verifies the new bank details. Either way, a bank change in the middle of a hold adds days you do not need.
Seller information confirmation
Etsy’s deposit help page says Etsy routinely notifies some sellers that they must confirm their seller info to comply with regulations, and that Etsy may hold deposits until you do. The seller info page names the rules behind those requests. The INFORM Consumers Act applies in the US to sellers with 200 or more US sales totaling more than $5,000 in a 12-month period over the last 24 months. The Digital Services Act applies to professional sellers who sell to EU or EEA buyers. DAC7 applies to EU sellers with 30 or more sales or €2,000 or more in the past year. Canadian and UK platform reporting rules also trigger requests.
The consequences of a missed deadline are concrete. You cannot receive funds from your sales, and Etsy may pause the shop in Etsy-initiated vacation mode. If you still have not confirmed within 90 days of the deadline, the shop is closed. Etsy says it cannot grant extensions, and your deadline appears in the email and in Shop Manager. Our guide to Etsy DAC7 seller information walks through that process.
Card and billing gaps
Etsy requires a valid credit or debit card on your account to receive Etsy Payments funds. If fees are greater than sales, your current balance is negative and there is nothing to deposit. An overdue bill can also lead to suspension. Our guide to Etsy fees past due covers billing holds.
Suspensions
Etsy’s reinstatement page says that while an account is suspended, you may find funds in your Etsy Payment account are being reserved. You can still complete orders, add tracking, issue refunds and pay your bill on Etsy.com. Funds held during a suspension usually follow the resolution of the suspension. Etsy says a tax ID suspension should be reinstated automatically shortly after you add the taxpayer ID, and completing bank verification should quickly reinstate the account. Paying the amount due should do the same for an overdue bill. For policy suspensions, see our guide to Etsy shop suspensions and our article on funds reserved after a suspension.
Termination
If Etsy terminates a seller’s use of Etsy Payments, the policy says non-disputed available funds are deposited to the seller’s bank account. Etsy may set off an amount it determines is adequate to cover anticipated chargebacks, refunds and adjustments for a prospective 180-day period. At the end of that 180 days, Etsy disburses any amount not used, or seeks reimbursement if more was needed.
How Long Etsy Can Hold Deposits
The Payments Policy gives a written limit for each kind of hold or delay. These limits are the backbone of any release request.
| Situation | Limit stated by Etsy | What ends it |
|---|---|---|
| Significant dispute or investigation | Up to 180 days from each order’s estimated delivery, less if Etsy closes its review first | Investigation closed, or 180 days passed |
| Deposit delay | 0 to 180 days between sale and availability | The delay period for each sale running out, or Etsy changing the delay |
| Variable reserve | Deducted up to 90 days, or delayed up to 180 days | Period ends or Etsy reduces or removes the reserve |
| New bank account | 5 days after verification | Five days pass |
| Seller information or bank verification gap | Until the step is completed | Completing the confirmation or verification |
| Termination of Etsy Payments | Set-off for a prospective 180-day period | Disbursement of the unused amount after 180 days |
| New seller standard timing | Funds generally eligible 14 days after a sale | Shop history and standing improving |
Two points follow. First, an Etsy hold is never open-ended under the policy. Each type has an end point. Second, the end point is measured from facts you can document, such as estimated delivery dates, investigation outcomes and verification dates. Keep those facts in one place and you will know, to the day, when a hold should end.
Clearing the Cause of an Etsy Deposit Hold
Our method rests on one position, that funds are payable subject only to genuine, quantifiable liability and the waiting period stated in the policy. Every step below supports that position.
Hold reason checklist
| Possible reason | Where to check | How it clears |
|---|---|---|
| Funds not yet scheduled | Payment settings, deposit schedule | Wait for the date or start a transfer if eligible |
| Fees greater than sales | Payment account current balance | Sales cover fees, or pay the balance |
| No valid card on file | Billing settings | Add a valid credit or debit card |
| Bank account not verified | Payment settings banner | Complete verification on Etsy.com |
| Bank account recently changed | Payment account pending balance | Five days pass after verification |
| Seller information not confirmed | Shop Manager Dashboard banner | Confirm the information before the deadline |
| Reserve | Payment account, Orders page badges | Tracking confirmed in transit, or the reserve period ends |
| Dispute or investigation hold | Etsy notice and open cases | Investigation closes, or 180 days after estimated delivery |
| Suspension | Email and dashboard banner | Resolve the cause of the suspension |
Step 1. Name the hold precisely
Use the checklist to find which hold applies, and write it down with the date it started and the amount held. Sellers often treat a reserve, a deposit delay and a dispute hold as the same problem. They end in different ways, so the response has to match the type.
Step 2. Resolve what is in your control first
Verification requests often hold deposits, so complete any bank verification or seller information confirmation first. Then answer every open case with tracking, delivery confirmation and the buyer message thread. Issue refunds where the buyer is right. Each resolved case removes part of the liability Etsy is holding against.
Step 3. Map the clock
For a dispute or investigation hold, list every held order with its estimated delivery date and the date 180 days later. That table shows when each order’s hold reaches the policy limit if the investigation is still open.
Step 4. Reconcile the balance
Download the monthly statement and calculate three figures, which are total held, the amount tied to open cases or chargebacks, and the remainder. The remainder is the amount with no live liability attached.
Step 5. Request release with an accounting
Once the cause is resolved, or the period has run, write to Etsy through the Etsy Payments support route named in your notice. Keep it short. Name the notice and the hold, state the cause and that it is resolved, and give the date the stated period ended or will end. Attach the order and delivery records and the reconciliation. Make one request, for release of all funds not subject to a specific hold, with a written accounting of anything still withheld. A payments reviewer acts on dates and order numbers, so leave legal arguments for the second letter, if one is needed at all.
When funds stay held past the limit
If 180 days have passed since the estimated delivery date of the held orders, or Etsy has confirmed the investigation is closed, and funds are still held, the policy’s own limit supports release. Send a second request that cites the Payments Policy section on holds, the dates, and the reconciliation. Ask for release and a written accounting. Keep a dated record of every message. EU sellers can then file through Etsy’s free internal complaint-handling system and ask for mediation through CEDR, which Etsy has appointed as its mediator. Etsy’s P2B page tells sellers outside the EU to use Contact support, although the UK version of the regulation gives UK business users the same complaint and mediation rights.
Business Models That Run Into Holds
Suspended shops with an open balance
A shop suspended for a policy reason often has a balance in its Payment account. Deposits are held through the investigation. To operate compliantly, keep fulfilling open orders with tracking, resolve every case and fix the suspension cause. The balance follows the outcome.
Shops with a large dispute or chargeback
A high-ticket order disputed through a card issuer can trigger a hold on that transaction or the whole account. To operate compliantly, respond to the dispute with tracking, delivery confirmation and the full message history, and keep records ready for every order above your average value.
Sellers with incomplete verification
An EU seller who never verified a bank account, or a seller who skipped a seller information request, sees deposits wait for documents. To operate compliantly, complete verification at shop opening and answer information requests before the deadline.
Sellers who ship counterfeit-risk categories
The policy names counterfeiting among the concerns that can justify a hold. Sellers of branded or licensed goods should keep supplier records and authorization ready, because a rights complaint can escalate into a hold.
First Hold, Repeat Holds and Regional Law
Etsy documents no tiers for holds. The time limits are the same for a first hold and a repeat. Repeat holds matter because the Payments Policy lists suspensions or warnings already received among its risk factors, so a shop with past holds can expect reserves and delays to be set more conservatively. A repeat also suggests the underlying cause, often slow dispute responses or missing tracking, has not been fixed.
The legal context differs by region, and a seller weighing court action should speak to a lawyer licensed where the seller is based.
| Region | Law | Relevance to a deposit hold |
|---|---|---|
| United States | Contract law and the duty of good faith, stated for UCC contracts in UCC section 1-304 | The Etsy Payments Policy is the contract, and its hold limits are terms Etsy has set for itself. A release request that applies those terms is the strongest first step. |
| United States | Common-law conversion | Funds withheld with no contractual basis can raise conversion questions in litigation. Reserve this for counsel after a documented request has failed. |
| European Union | Regulation (EU) 2019/1150 (P2B), Articles 4, 11 and 12, applicable since 12 July 2020 | Article 11 requires a complaint system that is free of charge for business users, and Article 12 requires at least two named mediators. Article 4 requires a statement of reasons at least 30 days before Etsy terminates all of a seller’s access, with narrow exceptions. |
| United Kingdom | UK version of the P2B rules, Article 1(2) | Covers sellers established in the United Kingdom who offer goods to consumers located in the United Kingdom, wherever the platform is based. |
Cash Flow Planning During an Etsy Deposit Hold
The prevention lesson is to resolve disputes and verification requests fast, so no investigation keeps deposits held. While a hold runs, cash planning keeps the shop operating.
Build the hold calendar
From the table in Step 3, list each held order, its amount and its latest release date. Add expected releases from any reserve. This gives you a week-by-week view of when held money should return.
Protect the essentials
- Keep a valid credit or debit card on file, because Etsy requires one before it will send Etsy Payments funds.
- Prioritize shipping open orders with tracking, which protects you from new cases.
- Pause Etsy Ads and large material orders until releases arrive.
- Avoid changing your bank account during a hold, because a full change makes sales funds ineligible for deposit for 5 business days.
Keep a written log
Record each held amount, the date held, the reason, each message sent to Etsy and each release. If a hold runs past its limit, the log is your evidence. If it does not, the log shows you what to change next time.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why are my Etsy deposits on hold?
Etsy holds deposits for a significant dispute or investigation, a suspension, or a verification gap such as an unverified bank account or unconfirmed seller information. Deposits can also wait because of a reserve, a negative balance or a recent bank change. Your Payment account and any Etsy notice show which applies.
How long can Etsy hold deposits?
For a significant dispute or investigation, Etsy can hold deposits for the shorter of 180 days after the estimated delivery date or the completion of the investigation. Other holds and delays have their own limits in the Etsy Payments Policy. Verification holds end when the step is completed.
What deposit delays can Etsy apply?
Etsy can apply a deposit delay of between 0 and 180 days between a sale and the day its net amount is available. The delay applies across all of a seller’s transactions and is shown in the Payment account.
Where is the Etsy deposit hold rule?
The rule is in the Etsy Payments Policy, in the section on reserves, holds and delays. Etsy’s help pages on deposits, reserves and bank verification explain how the policy applies in practice.
How do I release an Etsy deposit hold?
Resolve the dispute, investigation or verification gap that caused it. Then request release through the Etsy Payments support route in your notice, with order and delivery records and a reconciliation of the balance. Ask for a written accounting of any amount still withheld.
