Amazon Restricted Products: Why You Can’t Sell Some Items and What to Do

By October 8, 2026No Comments7 min read

Quick answer: Amazon restricts products that are illegal, unsafe, or covered by its own policies, and some categories, brands, and ASINs need approval before you can list them. In Seller Central, search for the product under Add Products: “Sell this product” means no approval is needed, “Apply to sell” means approval is required, and “Not Available” means you cannot list it. Listing a restricted product can lead to listing removal, inventory destruction without reimbursement, withheld payments, or suspension.

Restricted products are one of the most common reasons sellers lose listings, and sometimes their account. The confusing part is that a product can be legal and still not be allowed on Amazon, or allowed only after approval. This guide explains the difference between restricted, gated, and prohibited products, how to check before you list, and how to respond if Amazon removes a listing. Every rule below comes from Amazon’s Seller Central policies.

What Amazon Means by Restricted Products

Amazon’s Restricted Products policy states that products offered on Amazon must comply with all applicable laws, regulations, and Amazon policies, and that the sale of illegal, unsafe, or other restricted products, including prescription-only products, is strictly prohibited. Amazon publishes category pages covering areas such as alcohol, cosmetics, dietary supplements, drugs, electronics, food and beverage, hazardous items, medical devices, pesticides, recalled products, and weapons.

Amazon is clear that its examples are not all-inclusive. Even a product listed as an example of a permitted listing must comply with the law.

TypeWhat it meansWhat you can do
ProhibitedThe product cannot be sold on Amazon, because it is illegal, unsafe, or banned by Amazon policyDo not list it. Remove any existing listing.
Requires approval (gated)The category, brand, ASIN, or sub-category needs pre-approval before you can listApply to sell with the required documents, such as purchase invoices dated within 180 days
Allowed with conditionsThe product can be sold if it meets category rules, such as listing requirements, claims limits, or extra documentationMeet the category page requirements before listing

How to Check Whether You Can Sell a Product

Amazon describes the check in Seller Central:

  1. Go to Add Products.
  2. Search for your product.
  3. Read the status: “Not Available” means it can’t be listed, “Sell this product” means no approval is needed, and “Apply to sell” means approval is required.
  4. Select Show limitations for the detailed requirements.

For new products not yet in the catalog, Amazon suggests searching for similar items to understand likely restrictions. Some products require more than one approval.

How to Get Approved for a Gated Category or Brand

Prepare your documents

Amazon lists what to prepare before applying: purchase invoices dated within 180 days, clear product photos showing all sides, brand authorization letters where applicable, safety certifications when required, and commercial liability insurance documentation for certain categories.

Submit the application

From Add Products, select Apply to sell, complete the form, and upload your documents. Amazon says review takes 2 to 7 business days. You can track drafts and status on the Selling Applications page.

Watch for insurance requirements

For categories with enhanced safety listing requirements, Amazon requires commercial liability insurance covering those products regardless of monthly sales, with coverage of at least USD 1 million per occurrence.

What Happens If You List a Restricted Product

Amazon states that it may take corrective action including immediately suspending or terminating selling privileges, destroying inventory in its fulfillment centers without reimbursement, returning inventory, terminating the business relationship, and permanently withholding payments. Selling illegal or unsafe products can also lead to civil and criminal penalties.

Amazon also warns that listings found to be purposely inaccurate, miscategorized, or deceptively described to get around restrictions can lead to immediate termination of selling privileges. And moving a restricted listing to out of stock does not make it compliant.

What to Do If Amazon Removed Your Listing

If the product really is restricted

Close the listing, remove or dispose of the inventory as directed, and fix the process that let it be listed. Amazon says it may reinstate a seller’s account if the seller effectively addressed the root causes and put strong measures in place to prevent recurrence.

If Amazon flagged it in error

Amazon acknowledges its systems may remove permitted products, for example when product information is incomplete or when a product has both over-the-counter and prescription versions. Amazon advises closing the listing immediately while you appeal the restriction with Selling Partner Support.

Build a compliance check into your process

Amazon’s best practices include not assuming a product is allowed because it has an existing ASIN or is not named on a prohibited list, not listing when in doubt, and assigning someone to review each product before it is listed.

For gated categories and brands, our brand approval and ungating service prepares the application. Safety and compliance removals are handled by our product safety and compliance service, and removed listings can go through our listing recovery service. If restricted product violations have led to a suspension, see our Amazon suspension and reinstatement service.
