Quick answer. An Etsy shop suspended for medical claims is almost always answering a pattern, not a single listing. One removed listing for “cures eczema” is a correction. A run of removals across tags, titles and product images, or a catalog whose brand voice is built on treatment language, moves the case from the listing to the account. Section 1 of Etsy’s Prohibited Items Policy covers items making medical claims, and Etsy says sellers deemed to violate that policy can face immediate account suspension or termination. Etsy publishes no violation count, so a repeat action can arrive sooner than sellers expect. A temporary suspension is resolved by fixing the cause and replying to Etsy’s email. A permanent suspension gets one appeal through the Appeals Center, filed within 6 months of the suspension date, and Etsy treats the answer as final.
How an Etsy Shop Gets Suspended for Medical Claims After Repeat Removals
Etsy enforces health wording through two connected documents. The Medical Claims policy defines a medical claim as any statement suggesting a product can affect a person’s health, body or medical condition, whether in the title, description or images, and says Etsy may remove a listing that makes or implies a prohibited claim. Section 1 of the Prohibited Items Policy, one of eight numbered sections and the one covering drugs, drug paraphernalia, medical drugs and devices and items making medical claims, carries the account consequences. Etsy shows the Medical Claims policy as last updated on June 2, 2026, so any copy you wrote before that date deserves a fresh read against the current text.
The Prohibited Items Policy opens with a zero tolerance statement. Sellers deemed to violate it can be subject to immediate account suspension or termination in accordance with the Terms of Use. If Etsy has reason to believe you, your content or your use of its services violate the Terms, it may deactivate your content to some or all buyers, or suspend or terminate your account and any accounts it determines are related to yours. The same policy says violating it may result in selling privileges being suspended and/or terminated.
The steps a repeat case usually passes through
Etsy does not publish a fixed ladder for medical claims. The sequence below is the pattern we see in these files, with each step tied to what Etsy documents.
- A listing is removed. Etsy emails you and the removal appears on the Policy violations page in Shop Manager, which Etsy describes as the place to keep track of removed listings. The page is only available on the desktop and mobile web versions of Etsy, not inside the app.
- More removals follow. Usually because the first fix changed one field and left the same phrase in tags, other listings or image text.
- The account is suspended. Etsy’s listing appeals article says that if your shop has multiple policy violations, Etsy may have to remove any Star Seller badges you have, or suspend your account. Etsy says suspended members generally receive an email stating the type of suspension, permanent or temporary, and the reason for it.
- The suspension is permanent, or becomes final. A permanent suspension leaves one appeal. If the specialist decides the account stays closed, Etsy says there is no further consideration of reinstatement.
Etsy can also skip steps. The Prohibited Items Policy allows immediate suspension or termination, and Etsy notes it may not notify you first where you have repeatedly violated its Terms or where legal or regulatory reasons prevent notice.
Why repeat cases form in wellness shops
Repeat medical claim cases cluster in three business models. Herbal tea, tincture and wellness shops describe ingredients by what people hope they do. Skincare and soap makers name the skin conditions their customers search for. Crystal, aromatherapy and spiritual product sellers describe stones and oils by the feelings and conditions they are said to help. In each model the claims are the brand voice itself, repeated across every listing, every tag set and every product graphic. A one-listing fix rarely holds, and the account becomes the subject of the review.
The first question we ask
Because disclaimers do not help, our first question on any repeat file is whether any word in the catalog still implies a product treats or prevents a condition. We look at tags and image text before descriptions, since that is where most sellers miss claims. The answer tells us whether the shop can credibly say the problem is closed.
Why Disclaimers Do Not Cure a Prohibited Claim
Etsy’s Medical Claims policy is direct. Adding a disclaimer to a listing does not make a prohibited medical claim acceptable, and medical claims prohibited by Etsy always violate its policies, regardless of any disclaimers. The policy also says the prohibited claims are not allowed regardless of accuracy or legality.
This matters most in repeat cases, because many sellers responded to an earlier removal by adding “These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA” or “not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease” and leaving the claims in place. To a reviewer, that sequence shows the seller knew the wording was a concern and chose to keep it. A disclaimer under a claim does not reduce the claim. In a repeat file it can count against you.
What Etsy prohibits
- Claims that a product prevents, heals, treats, diagnoses, mitigates or cures a disease or medical condition. General wellness benefits may be described.
- Claims that a product substitutes for, or is as effective as, a prescription drug, over-the-counter medication, vaccine or medical procedure, including alternatives to named drug categories such as antibiotics, steroids or antidepressants.
- Any claims about skin bleaching or whitening, weight loss or body transformation, sexual dysfunction or impotence, and FDA or other regulatory approval of supplements or similar products.
- Testimonials that make prohibited claims. Etsy allows testimonials only when they do not.
Etsy also prohibits medical drugs, regulated medical devices and certain herbal substances, including THC and CBD, as items. For those products there is no wording fix. Our core guide to the Etsy medical claims policy covers each claim type in detail with rewrite examples.
The law behind Etsy’s line
Etsy says medical claims may be subject to government review in many countries and that sellers must follow the laws that apply to them. In the United States, Section 5 of the FTC Act, 15 U.S.C. 45, prohibits deceptive acts or practices. Section 12, 15 U.S.C. 52, prohibits false advertisements for food, drugs, devices or cosmetics. The Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act defines a drug to include articles intended for the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment or prevention of disease, 21 U.S.C. 321(g)(1). In the EU, Directive 2005/29/EC, Annex I, point 17, bans falsely claiming a product can cure illnesses, dysfunction or malformations. In the UK, the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024, Schedule 20, paragraph 19, bans falsely claiming a product can prevent or treat disease, restore or modify a physiological function, or modify appearance. UK law also defines disease to include any injury, ailment or adverse condition, whether of body or mind, so an “eases anxiety” line on a crystal or oil listing sits inside the same rule as an eczema claim on a soap. None of these statutes is the reason Etsy removes a listing. They explain why Etsy draws a strict line, and why a disclaimer was never going to carry the weight sellers hoped. Talk to a lawyer in your own country before you sell anything under health language off Etsy.
How the rules compare by region
| Region | Law that applies to the claim | What it says | Seller rights after an Etsy action |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | FTC Act Sections 5 and 12, 15 U.S.C. 45 and 52, plus 21 U.S.C. 321(g)(1) | Deceptive practices and false advertisements for food, drugs, devices or cosmetics are unlawful. A product intended to cure, mitigate, treat or prevent disease is defined as a drug. | Etsy’s own routes only, the email reply for a temporary suspension and one Appeals Center appeal within 6 months for a permanent one |
| European Union | Directive 2005/29/EC of 11 May 2005, Annex I point 17 | Falsely claiming a product can cure illnesses, dysfunction or malformations is banned in all circumstances. | DSA statement of reasons, a free internal complaint route open for at least six months after the decision, certified out-of-court settlement with a decision due within 90 calendar days, plus Etsy’s P2B complaint system and CEDR mediation |
| United Kingdom | Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024, Schedule 20, paragraph 19 | Falsely claiming a product can prevent or treat disease, restore or modify a physiological function, or modify appearance is banned. Disease includes conditions of the mind. | Retained P2B Article 4, a statement of reasons and at least 30 days’ notice before full termination, unless Etsy can show repeated infringement |
The middle column is why the claim fails everywhere. The right column is why the region you sell from still changes your options after the action.

What a Repeat or Permanent Action Removes
A suspension does more than take listings down. Knowing exactly what is affected helps you decide what to protect and what to fix first.
- Your listings and shop. Etsy’s help article on removed listings notes that listings may be inactive if your shop is suspended. Buyers cannot purchase from you while the suspension stands.
- Your standing. Etsy says multiple policy violations can lead it to remove Star Seller badges.
- Your access and content. The Terms of Use say that if Etsy suspends or terminates an account, you do not have a contractual or legal right to continue using its services, and that if your account is terminated you may lose information associated with it, including your content.
- Related accounts. Etsy may suspend or terminate any accounts it determines are related to yours. Other shops you run, or shops tied to you, are exposed.
- Your payments account. Section 3d of the Seller Policy says Etsy may place restrictions or reserves on your payments account, or suspend your account, where it believes your shop may result in disputes, chargebacks, increased risk of fraud or other claims. Our guide to funds reserved after an Etsy suspension covers that side of the case.
The related accounts clause in practice
The clause on related accounts is the one sellers underestimate. A wellness brand often runs a second shop for a sister product line or a wholesale catalog. If both shops share the same claim-heavy copy, a permanent action on one puts the other at risk, and a fresh shop opened to continue the same business is treated the same way. We cover this in our guide to opening a new Etsy shop after termination.
The first 48 hours after a suspension
What you do in the first two days shapes every option that follows. In the cases we work, the sellers who keep their options open do four things quickly and calmly.
- Preserve the record. Save the suspension email, take a dated record of every entry on the Policy violations page, and capture the current text of your listings, including tags and images. You will need the before and after for any appeal, and you may lose access to some account information if the action becomes final.
- Classify the suspension. Temporary or permanent, and the reason Etsy gives. Write down the suspension date and the date 6 months later.
- Stop new exposure. Do not create listings, open another shop or move inventory to another account. Each of these can be read as a related account or a circumvention attempt.
- Start the catalog audit. Begin the claim screen across the whole catalog right away, because the appeal or reply depends on it being complete.
What you should not do in that window is write to Etsy before you know what you are correcting. A fast reply that repeats the claims, argues they are true or promises a disclaimer gives the reviewer the wrong first impression of the file.
Options That Remain After the Action
Your options depend on the type of suspension. Read the suspension email carefully before you do anything else.
For a temporary suspension, fix the cause and reply
Etsy’s help article says that if an email told you your account is suspended and asked you to reply when the problem is resolved, the suspension is temporary, and the best way to communicate with Etsy is to reply to that email. For a medical claims case, resolving the problem means removing every prohibited claim from every listing, tag and image before you reply, then describing what you changed. Replying before the catalog is clean invites a second review that finds the same words.
For a permanent suspension, make one appeal through the Appeals Center
Etsy’s help article on permanently suspended accounts sets out the route.
- You have 6 months from the day your account was suspended to file. If you miss the window, the account remains permanently suspended and you cannot appeal.
- Before filing, make sure you understand Etsy’s House Rules, that no listings violate the Prohibited Items Policy, Creativity Standards or Intellectual Property Policy, and that open cases and outstanding balances are resolved.
- You file through the Appeals Center by signing in to the suspended account, choosing the reason, describing the actions you have taken to address the issues, describing how your practices will change, and attaching documents.
- A specialist reviews your appeal and your account history and replies with a final decision by email. Etsy puts the wait at up to two weeks, citing the complex nature of these investigations.
- Submitting an appeal does not guarantee reinstatement. If the specialist decides the account will stay closed, the decision is final and there is no further consideration.
Etsy asks appellants to be transparent and forthcoming about the issue and their actions, and to show they understand the policies and how to meet them. For a medical claims appeal, that means quoting the type of wording that was in the catalog, stating where it appeared, and showing the corrected catalog and the screening step now in place. Our guide to writing an Etsy reinstatement appeal covers structure in more depth.
Individual listing appeals
Separately, Etsy offers appeals for some individual listing removals from the Policy violations page. Whether a medical claims removal qualifies depends on the type of violation, so look for View & appeal on the page and check the original removal email for instructions. Where the option exists, appeals are filed one listing at a time, you have up to 6 months from removal unless otherwise stated, and a denied appeal cannot be resubmitted for the same listing. This route is only worth using for a listing that did not make a prohibited claim. In a repeat case, appealing listings that did make claims weakens your credibility for the account appeal.
Regional rights for EU and UK sellers
EU sellers can use Etsy’s free internal complaint-handling system under the Platform-to-Business Regulation, Regulation (EU) 2019/1150, which Etsy says lets EU sellers clarify the circumstances behind a restriction, suspension or termination, and can request mediation if the complaint is not resolved. Because a medical claims action is a decision about content that Etsy considers incompatible with its terms, the Digital Services Act, Regulation (EU) 2022/2065, also gives EU users a statement of reasons (Article 17), an internal complaint route (Article 20) and certified out-of-court dispute settlement (Article 21).
UK sellers can rely on the retained Platform-to-Business Regulation, Article 4. It requires a statement of reasons before or when a restriction or suspension takes effect, and at least 30 days’ notice before full termination. That notice period does not apply where Etsy is under a legal or regulatory obligation to terminate sooner, exercises a right of termination for an imperative reason under the law, or can show you have repeatedly infringed its terms. Repeat medical claims cases often fall in that last exception, which is why the record of prior removals matters so much. Even then, Article 4 still requires Etsy to give a statement of reasons without undue delay.
For EU sellers the numbers matter. Etsy says its Platform-to-Business complaint system is free and that a decision found to be wrong will be reversed as soon as possible. If the complaint fails, Etsy names the Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution as its mediator, pays the mediation costs upfront, and starting mediation does not affect your right to go to court. Under DSA Article 20 the internal complaint route must stay open for at least six months after the decision, and under Article 21 a certified dispute body must decide within 90 calendar days of receiving the complaint, except in highly complex disputes.
Options checklist after a repeat or permanent Etsy action
- Read the suspension email and note whether it says temporary or “permanently suspended,” and the reason given.
- Note the date of the suspension and the date 6 months later, the last day to appeal a permanent suspension.
- Export or record every entry on your Policy violations page.
- Remove or correct every listing with a prohibited claim, including tags and image text.
- Remove any listing for a product Etsy prohibits outright, such as CBD items or regulated medical devices.
- Resolve open cases and pay any outstanding balance.
- For a temporary suspension, reply to the email after the catalog is clean, describing the changes.
- For a permanent suspension, prepare one complete appeal for the Appeals Center with actions taken, changed practices and documents.
- EU sellers should consider Etsy’s internal complaint-handling system and mediation.
- UK sellers should check whether a statement of reasons and notice were given under retained P2B Article 4.
- Do not open or operate another shop while the suspension stands.
What Never to Do After a Repeat Action
Most of the cases we see that end permanently were made worse after the suspension. Avoid these.
- Opening a new shop. The Seller Policy prohibits creating duplicate shops or taking other action to circumvent Etsy’s policies, and the Terms of Use allow action against accounts Etsy determines are related to yours. A new shop with the same products and claims is the clearest possible repeat.
- Adding disclaimers and calling it fixed. Etsy states disclaimers never cure a prohibited claim. An appeal that relies on a disclaimer will read as a misunderstanding of the policy.
- Arguing that the claims are true. Etsy prohibits these claims regardless of accuracy. Studies, traditional use and customer results do not change the outcome on Etsy.
- Blaming buyers, competitors or Etsy’s systems. Etsy asks appellants to be transparent about the issue that caused the suspension, and an appeal that points elsewhere skips the one question the specialist is there to answer.
- Filing a rushed appeal. You get one decision. A permanent suspension appeal that is denied is final, so file once, when the catalog is clean and your evidence is complete.
- Appealing listings that did make claims. It signals that you still do not see the wording as a problem.
- Relisting prohibited products under new names. Renaming a CBD product or a device does not change what it is.
- Promising to “be more careful.” Reviewers look for named controls, owners and records.
Writing the appeal itself
Our appeals follow five parts, drawn from our case method.
- Position. The listings no longer make prohibited medical or health claims, and the shop has a screening step that keeps it that way.
- Root cause. The exact type of wording and where it appeared, whether titles, descriptions, tags or images. For example, condition names added to tags for search, and a product graphic listing benefits by condition.
- Corrective actions. Claims removed, descriptions rewritten in ingredient and use language, and the whole catalog audited, with counts.
- Preventive measures. A copy-review step that screens every new or edited listing against a written banned phrase list, the person who owns it, and how often the catalog is audited.
- Evidence. The affected listings, the corrected copy and the review record. List only documents you can produce.
Keep it factual. Do not argue tone, plead hardship or threaten legal action in a first appeal. If you are an EU or UK seller, the regional rights above exist alongside the appeal and do not replace it.
How to Prevent a Repeat Medical Claims Suspension
Every wellness shop prevents this the same way. Disease names, treatment verbs and approval language come out of titles, tags, variation names and image text before a listing goes live, not after Etsy finds them. After a repeat action, prevention has to be visible as well as real, because the appeal asks how your practices will change.
A two-gate product and copy check
- Product gate. Before any item is listed, confirm it is not a drug, a prohibited herbal substance such as THC or CBD, drug paraphernalia, or a medical drug or regulated medical device under the Prohibited Items Policy.
- Copy gate. Before any listing is published or edited, screen the title, description, every tag, variation names and every image against the banned phrase list. Check for weight, body shape, skin tone, sexual function and approval language, stated or implied.
Business model controls
- Herbal and tea shops. Lead with ingredients, flavor, origin and brewing method. Remove condition names from search tags and replace them with ingredient and occasion terms.
- Skincare and soap makers. Describe skin feel and ingredients. Remove condition names and all lightening language. Rebuild before and after photos as product and texture photos.
- Crystal and aromatherapy shops. Describe the material, origin, size, scent and tradition. Redesign “properties” charts that list conditions.
Catalog audits and ownership
Name one person who owns copy review. Audit the full catalog monthly against the banned phrase list, and again before any new product line, supplier or campaign goes live. Keep the results. Our guide to reviewing Etsy listings for health claims includes a ready checklist and audit log.

An illustrative composite scenario
This composite reflects common patterns and does not describe any single shop. A skincare brand had eight listings removed over three months for eczema and acne claims, and each time it deleted the phrase from the description and added an FDA disclaimer. Its tags still read “eczema cream” and “acne treatment,” and two product photos showed before and after skin. Etsy suspended the shop. The appeal that followed opened with a plain account of the wording and where it sat, listed the 96 listings reviewed and the 41 corrected, attached the banned phrase list and the named reviewer, and showed the redesigned photos. It did not argue the products worked. Whatever the decision, that is the appeal a specialist can evaluate on its merits.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Etsy suspend my shop for health claims?
Yes, prohibited items violations can lead to suspension or termination. Items making medical claims fall under Section 1 of the Prohibited Items Policy, which allows immediate account suspension or termination under Etsy’s Terms of Use.
Can I open a second Etsy shop after a medical claims termination?
Opening a new shop to keep selling is treated as circumvention. Etsy’s Seller Policy prohibits duplicate shops created to circumvent its policies, and its Terms of Use allow Etsy to suspend or terminate accounts it determines are related to yours.
Does Etsy count past violations?
No fixed number appears anywhere in Etsy’s Prohibited Items Policy or help pages, so every removal on your Policy violations page counts as history. Etsy says multiple policy violations can lead to Star Seller removal or suspension, and an appeal reviewer looks at your account history.
Is there any appeal after a repeat medical claims action on Etsy?
Yes, a permanent suspension can be appealed once through Etsy’s Appeals Center within 6 months of the suspension date. The specialist replies by email, and Etsy says that can take up to two weeks. A denial ends the matter, with no further consideration of reinstatement.
How do I stop medical claims from coming back in my Etsy listings?
Screen every title, tag, variation and product image for disease names, treatment verbs and approval language before the listing is published. Back that with a written banned phrase list, a named reviewer, and monthly catalog audits with records.
Does an FDA disclaimer protect an Etsy listing from removal?
No, Etsy’s Medical Claims policy says adding a disclaimer does not make a prohibited claim acceptable. A disclaimer sitting under an eczema or weight loss claim leaves the claim in place, and in a repeat file it shows the wording was known to be a problem.
