How to Fix Walmart On-Time Delivery Below 90 Percent Early

By August 26, 2026November 2nd, 2026No Comments22 min read

Walmart on-time delivery below 90 percent means your account has fallen under the On-Time Delivery Rate standard in Walmart’s Seller Performance Standards, and Walmart expects immediate corrective action. The standard measures the share of orders delivered on or before the Expected Delivery Date across the last 30 or 60 days. Walmart’s Seller Performance Standards overview, last updated July 28, 2026, states that failing to act may result in suppression, suspension or termination of the account. The warning stage is the cheapest point to fix it. The drop shows on the Performance dashboard, in a weekly performance report or in a performance warning email before Walmart touches the account. The fix usually sits in four settings you already control, which are transit time, lag time, order cutoff and the carrier service behind each shipping method.

How Walmart Measures On-Time Delivery Below 90 Percent

Walmart defines the On-Time Delivery Rate as the rate of orders delivered on or before the Expected Delivery Date, and the US standard is a rate of 90% or above. Walmart evaluates its standards over the last 30 or 60 days. It tells sellers to watch the metric from the Performance dashboard in Seller Center, the Walmart Seller app or the Seller Performance APIs, and the dashboard lets you download reports that list the affected orders.

Delivery is now the primary shipping metric. Shipping on time still matters through a separate Late Shipment Rate standard of 5% or below, which counts orders shipped after the Expected Ship Date. A seller who checks only that boxes left the dock can watch the delivery rate slide while the shipping rate looks clean. The margin is thin for a small account. Eleven late arrivals in a window of 100 delivered orders puts the rate at 89%, under the standard.

How the warning reaches you

Walmart’s performance notifications guide, last updated March 12, 2026, lists the messages that bear on delivery.

  • Performance warnings. Sent by email or Seller Center notification when performance falls below any key metric in the Seller Performance Standards, with the primary factors behind the drop and recommendations to improve.
  • Weekly performance reports. A summary of how the account performed the previous week.
  • Daily ship. Sent when orders miss their ship date, lack valid tracking numbers or lack carrier scans by the Expected Ship Date.
  • Late Origin Scan. Sent for shipped orders the carrier has not scanned for two business days (48 hours) after the shipping confirmation reached Walmart.
  • Unshipped by Expected Ship Date and At Risk of Auto-Cancellation. Sent when orders pass the Expected Ship Date without a shipping confirmation, with the auto-cancellation window set at the Expected Ship Date plus four days.

Walmart states that triggering performance alarms affects your performance metrics and may result in the automatic unpublishing of affected items. You cannot unsubscribe from these emails. Walmart describes them as the channel that tells you about actions that may affect account status, including potential suspensions.

How long the warning stage lasts

Walmart publishes no formal warning tier and no fix window for the On-Time Delivery standard. Its standards page says an account that fails any standard must take immediate action to improve. The warning stage is the gap between the first sign of a drop and the first action on the account, and Walmart does not say how long that gap runs. We treat the date of the first warning as the deadline.

Seller accountable and not accountable factors

Only seller-accountable drivers count toward your score. Walmart lists seven of them for On-Time Delivery. They are late hand-over to carrier, late shipment, no carrier scan, carrier delays, ship location mismatch, carrier method mismatch and a carrier Estimated Delivery Date later than promised. Carrier exceptions and weather delays are the two drivers Walmart lists as not seller accountable. Ordinary carrier delays count against you, so the fix usually runs through the carrier choice or the transit setting.

Shipped late or arrived late

The first question a Walmart reviewer asks is whether the promise failed or the execution failed. Orders that shipped late point to operations. Orders that shipped on time and still arrived late point to transit settings or the carrier. Sort every late order into one of the patterns below before you change a single setting.

Walmart On-Time Delivery warning triage checklist
  • What the notice names. Confirm the metric is On-Time Delivery and note the rate and the window (30 or 60 days) shown.
  • Current account status. Check whether any action has been taken, such as unpublished items, a seller fulfillment deactivation banner on the Performance page, or a suspension email.
  • The deadline. Walmart publishes no fix window. Treat the warning date as day one and finish the corrective changes within 48 hours, which is our working target.
  • The affected orders. Download the late-delivered order report from the Performance dashboard.
  • The split. For each late order, record ship date, first carrier scan and delivery date, then mark it shipped late or arrived late.
  • The pattern. Group late orders by carrier, service, region, warehouse and item.
  • The evidence to keep. Dated before and after screenshots of every setting you change.

Two sibling metrics usually move with delivery. Work through our notes on the response rate warning under 95 percent and the tracking rate warning under 99 percent while you repair the delivery numbers.

Expected Delivery Date Settings

Walmart’s Shipping and Fulfillment Policy, last updated July 2, 2026, states that the Expected Delivery Date is calculated from the order cutoff time, fulfillment lag time, seller-selected operational days and the transit time you specify for the item. The same policy says the date is assigned by adding the maximum transit time for a given method and region. Each input is a setting you control, and each one moves the rate.

How Walmart delivery settings that promise too much compare with settings built from your own delivery data. Flip between the two to see each lever.

Transit time by region

Transit time is the setting we change most often at the warning stage. If your transit time promises three days to a region your carrier reaches in five on a slow week, every order to that region is at risk. Pull the last 60 days of your own delivery data and find the transit time your carrier delivers to each region on its slower weeks. Set that figure. A longer promise can cost a little conversion. A missed promise costs the metric, the customer and, eventually, the account.

Lag time

Walmart requires orders to ship within two operational days after the order arrives unless Walmart has approved a lag time exemption. Exemption approval is discretionary, revocable and depends on the type of product. Lag time changes can take up to 24 hours to show on Walmart.com. Walmart also uses lag time to calculate the shipping date displayed to shoppers, so it holds you responsible for a lag time that reflects your real fulfillment capability. If your late orders shipped late, raise lag time on the affected items to what your team ships on its slowest normal week, within Walmart’s limit.

Order cutoff and operational days

Walmart requires an operating schedule for each active fulfillment center, with support for shipments until 11:00 am local time at least five days per week. Operational days default to Monday through Friday. Additional days off count against operational days and are capped at 30 per fulfillment center per calendar year, and Walmart says excessive use is closely monitored and can lead to suspension or termination. Plan days off ahead and keep them rare.

The policy’s lag time table shows how cutoff works. An order with zero lag time received before cutoff must ship the same operational day. The same order received after cutoff ships the next operational day. With one or two days of lag time the cutoff no longer applies, and the order must ship by the order date plus one or two operational days.

Ship-from location

Ship location mismatch is a seller-accountable driver. If orders leave from a different place than the fulfillment center configured in Seller Center, the Expected Delivery Date is calculated from the wrong starting point. Confirm every ship-from location matches the dock the packages leave from.

Why realistic settings help beyond the metric

Walmart says the delivery date shown to Walmart.com shoppers is calculated from your historical On-time Delivery rate, your carrier’s delivery input and Walmart’s logistical insights. The same date determines the search ranking of your product. Walmart also reserves the right to update or extend shipping dates. A seller who promises what it delivers builds the history that earns faster promises later.

Carrier and Ship Speed Fixes

Walmart offers five shipping methods, which are Value, Standard, TwoDay, OneDay and Freight. Each method you offer is a promise, and the carrier service behind it has to keep that promise in every region you serve.

Match service to method

Check each method you offer against the carrier service you buy. A ground service behind a TwoDay promise fails whenever distance or volume stretches transit. Either buy a faster service for that method or stop offering it where the carrier cannot meet it.

Choose carriers that scan and report

Walmart does not require any specific carrier or carrier service level to meet the transit times in each method. That freedom cuts both ways. Late hand-over, missing scans and slow transit all count against you whichever carrier you pick, and a non-integrated carrier is a listed driver of a low Valid Tracking Rate. Walmart’s valid tracking number policy, last updated February 11, 2026, requires you to authorize your carrier to share tracking data with Walmart before the item ships. Pick carriers that scan at pickup and report to Walmart without manual uploads.

Orders that will auto-cancel

Walmart auto-cancels an order that is not marked Shipped with tracking by the Expected Ship Date plus four calendar days. An order due to ship Monday is canceled on Friday. If you ship an order after it auto-cancels, Walmart is not obligated to reimburse you. Seller-caused cancellations feed the Cancellation Rate standard of 2% or below, so a delivery problem can become a cancellation problem inside one week. Our guide to the Walmart seller cancellation rate covers that metric.

Fix the business model behind the miss

Three operating models produce most of the delivery warnings we see, and each needs a structural fix.

  • Merchant-fulfilled sellers promising fast delivery with ground carriers. Transit exceeds the promise. Set transit by region and back faster methods with faster services.
  • Dropshippers relying on suppliers’ shipping. Delivery dates slip outside the seller’s control while the metric stays the seller’s. Walmart also prohibits buying from another retailer and having that retailer ship to the customer. Use only suppliers who ship within your lag time with integrated carriers, and read our guide on Walmart drop shipping violations before building on this model.
  • Sellers shipping long distances from one warehouse. Regional transit varies widely. Set transit time by region, add a second fulfillment location where volume justifies it, or shorten the promise footprint where distance causes misses.

Tracking That Proves Delivery

Walmart can only count an order as delivered on time if the tracking shows it. Tracking is part of the delivery fix and also its own standard. Walmart’s Valid Tracking Rate standard is 99% or above, and the tracking policy says invalid tracking or a miss on that 99% standard may result in selling restrictions, suspension or termination.

Scans that start the clock

No carrier scan is a seller-accountable driver for both On-Time Delivery and Valid Tracking. A package that sits at your dock after tracking is uploaded produces a Late Origin Scan notification once 48 hours pass without a carrier scan. Confirm daily pickups, ask your carrier to scan at pickup, and never upload tracking before the carrier has the package.

Tracking that validates

Walmart lists invalid tracking IDs, invalid tracking URLs, misleading tracking and non-integrated carriers among the seller-accountable drivers of Valid Tracking Rate. Each one can hide a delivery that was on time. The tracking policy also requires correct formatting with no special characters, and a tracking number can never match the purchase order or sales order number. Our guide to the Walmart Valid Tracking Rate covers that metric in detail.

Orders that never arrive

Walmart’s Shipping and Fulfillment Policy states that when an item is five days past the Expected Delivery Date and the carrier has reported no movement in the last three days, Walmart considers it to be in a terminal state, may cancel the order and holds you responsible for the costs. Repeated failures to meet the Expected Delivery Date may result in selling privilege restrictions. Stalled packages also drive the Item Not Received Rate, which has a standard of 2% or below, and negative feedback for items not received. Contact the carrier the day a package stops moving, and contact the customer before the Expected Delivery Date passes.

Customer messages about delivery

Late packages produce where-is-my-order messages. Walmart’s Seller Response Rate standard requires responses to 95% of customer inquiries within 48 hours, and order tracking is the first driver Walmart lists for that metric. Answer every delivery question with the tracking status and the action you are taking. Our guide to the Walmart Seller Response Rate covers that standard.

Weekly Review That Keeps the Rate Above 90

Set transit times by zone and review the delivery metric every week. A rolling 30 or 60 day window hides slow drift until the rate has already crossed the line. A weekly review catches the drift while the fix is still a settings change.

The weekly review, step by step

  1. Read the weekly performance report and any performance warning received.
  2. Open the Performance dashboard and compare On-Time Delivery across the 30 and 60 day windows. A 30-day rate below the 60-day rate means the trend is getting worse.
  3. Download the late-delivered order report for the week and sort it so the worst carrier and region sit at the top.
  4. Split shipped late from arrived late. Shipped late is an operations fix. Arrived late is a transit or carrier fix.
  5. Change one setting for the worst group and log the change with a dated screenshot.
  6. Check tracking health. Look for unscanned packages, invalid numbers and Late Origin Scan notifications.
  7. Check the metrics that move with delivery. Those are Valid Tracking Rate, Late Shipment Rate, Item Not Received Rate, Seller Response Rate and Cancellation Rate.

A composite example

This example combines patterns we see often and describes no single seller. A seller of outdoor furniture ships from one warehouse in the Midwest and offers Standard shipping nationwide with a single transit setting. The 60-day On-Time Delivery Rate sits at 93%. Then a seasonal promotion doubles volume, the carrier’s transit to the West Coast stretches by two days, and the 30-day rate falls to 87%. A performance warning arrives.

The seller downloads the late orders and splits them. Almost all shipped on time and arrived late, and most went to three western regions. The fix takes one afternoon. Transit time for those regions is raised to what the carrier delivered over the last 60 days, the heaviest items move to a freight service with a matching method, and the warehouse confirms daily scans at pickup. The seller logs each change with screenshots. Over the following weeks the 30-day rate recovers as the late orders age out of the window, and Walmart never acts on the account. The changes cost a little conversion in the western regions. They saved the account.

First warning compared with repeat warnings

Walmart publishes no strike count for performance warnings, and it sets no fixed thresholds between suppression, suspension and termination. A first warning with a clear, fixable cause arrives while every option is still open. A second or third warning for the same metric tells a different story. It suggests the first fix treated one week of late orders and left the settings or the carrier unchanged. On a repeat warning, go back to the split and the pattern. The fix has to change something structural, such as a second ship-from location, a different carrier for a region, a different method offered, or a lag time that matches your worst normal week.

If an action is taken anyway

Walmart’s appeal guide, last updated December 9, 2025, explains both paths. If seller fulfillment is suppressed, a deactivation warning appears as a banner on the Performance page, and you select Start appeal. If the account is suspended, select the Help button in the Seller Center menu bar to contact support and submit a written business plan of action. Depending on the reason, Walmart may ask for current warehouse images or supplier invoices less than two months old. Terminated accounts get no reason and no appeal. The corrective action log above becomes the core of the plan, with the cause, the changes already made, the weekly review that prevents a repeat and the evidence behind each. Our core guide to the Walmart On-Time Delivery Rate covers the appeal in full, and our guide on a denied On-Time Delivery appeal covers what to do if the first plan is declined.

Regional differences and the law

Walmart Marketplace Canada publishes its own targets in its Canadian Seller Performance Standards, last updated April 15, 2026, and they map neatly onto the warning stage. On-Time Delivery above 90% meets standard. Between 80% and 90% is marked needs attention. Below 80% is marked needs urgent review. The other Canadian targets differ from the US figures, with Valid Tracking Rate above 95%, Seller Response Rate above 80%, Refund Rate under 13% and Cancel Rate under 3%. The Canadian guide states that occasional underperformance does not necessarily put an account in negative standing, while failure to improve over prolonged periods may result in selling restrictions. Walmart’s Mexican marketplace operates under its own seller agreement, and we found no public Walmart page setting out a Mexican delivery standard.

The federal rule on promised shipping times in the United States is the FTC Mail, Internet, or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule at 16 C.F.R. Part 435, issued under 15 U.S.C. 57a and last revised at 79 FR 55619 on September 17, 2014. Under section 435.2, a seller needs a reasonable basis to expect it can ship within the stated time, or within 30 days when no time is stated. The window is 50 days when the buyer applies for credit to pay. A seller who cannot ship on time must offer the buyer the choice to consent to the delay or cancel for a prompt refund. The FTC’s business guide to the Rule sets that refund at seven working days for cash, check or third-party card payments and says violations can draw civil penalties of up to $53,088 each. The Rule concerns shipment. Walmart’s standard concerns delivery by a date your own settings create. Settings that promise only what you can deliver keep you inside both.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Walmart On-Time Delivery standard?

The US standard is 90% or above. It is measured as the share of orders delivered on or before the Expected Delivery Date, and Walmart lists it among its Seller Performance Standards.

How is Walmart On-Time Delivery measured?

Walmart counts orders delivered on or before the Expected Delivery Date over the last 30 or 60 days. Only seller-accountable factors count, and Walmart treats ordinary carrier delays as seller accountable. Carrier exceptions and weather delays do not count against you.

What happens when Walmart on-time delivery drops below 90 percent?

Walmart may suppress, suspend or terminate the account if the standard is not met and the seller does not act. A performance warning by email or in Seller Center usually comes first, and Walmart requires immediate action once a standard is missed.

How do I raise On-Time Delivery?

Set realistic ship speeds and use carriers that meet them. Set transit time by region from your own delivery data, set lag time to real capacity and back each shipping method with a carrier service that delivers at that speed. Review late-delivered orders every week.

Do carrier delays count against my Walmart delivery rate?

Yes, ordinary carrier delays count as seller accountable. Walmart excludes only carrier exceptions and weather delays, so the carrier you pick and the transit time you set carry the risk.

Did Walmart change its shipping metrics?

Yes, Walmart now uses On-Time Delivery, measured against the Expected Delivery Date, as the primary shipping metric. A separate Late Shipment Rate standard of 5% or below still applies to orders shipped after the Expected Ship Date, so sellers watch both.
