The answer to can I resell on Etsy is yes, but only in three cases. Those are craft and party supplies, vintage items that are 20 or more years old, and themed gift baskets you assemble yourself. Etsy’s Help Center states that reselling is not allowed outside those exceptions, and its Creativity Standards define each one narrowly. Most reselling removals we see are classification errors. A ready to use blank was listed as a supply, a retro styled item under 20 years was listed as vintage, or a generic household tool was treated as a craft tool. When that happens Etsy removes the listing, and the policy states you still owe the fees for listing it. The way to prevent it is a classification system that runs before anything is listed, with a written test for each category, age evidence for vintage, a supply check for every product, records filed by listing, and a short weekly and monthly audit.
Can I Resell on Etsy and What Etsy Requires
Etsy’s Help Center article on drop shipping and reselling defines reselling as selling a commercially available item that the seller did not make or design. It lists the only reselling allowed on Etsy.
- Craft and party supplies, which enable buyer creativity or decorate special events.
- Vintage items, which are handpicked items over 20 years old.
- Gift baskets, which are themed collections personally selected and packaged by the seller. Fully resold baskets are not allowed.
Drop shipping is not allowed except for craft and party supplies. Everything else on Etsy must be made or designed by the seller under the Creativity Standards.
The Creativity Standards place those exceptions in two categories. Vintage and gift baskets sit under handpicked by a seller. Craft supplies, party supplies and buyer personalized items made by a production partner sit under sourced by a seller. The standards state that Etsy reserves the right to remove listings that do not follow its policies and that sellers remain obligated to pay any fees incurred in listing them.
Why classification is the control
Our lead insight on reselling is that the reviewer applies Etsy’s category definitions literally. A beautiful item in the wrong category still comes down. That makes the category decision the single point where a removal is either prevented or set up. A shop that decides the category with a written test, before listing, rarely sees reselling removals. A shop that lets the category follow from wherever the product was bought sees them often.
What is at stake beyond the listing
Etsy’s Help Center on production partners states that working with non-qualifying businesses to source products, such as wholesalers and white label manufacturers, violates its reselling policies and may result in penalties up to and including account suspension. The listing appeals article states that multiple policy violations may lead to the removal of Star Seller badges or account suspension. A classification system protects the account as well as each listing.
The 20 Year Vintage Line and What Counts as Supplies
Vintage
The Creativity Standards define vintage items as items 20 or more years old that the seller personally curated or collected. Resold commercially available items newer than 20 years do not qualify, even if they are designed to appear vintage. Etsy states it may ask for additional photo documentation or information about vintage items, such as their source, age, designer or materials.
The 20 year line moves forward every year. An item made 19 years ago cannot be listed as vintage today, and will qualify next year if its age can be shown. We set a rule for clients. An item is listed as vintage only when its age can be shown, and the evidence is filed before the listing goes live.
Craft supplies
Craft supplies are tools or materials whose primary purpose is creating a new item by hand. The Creativity Standards give craft tools such as knitting needles and clay sculpting tools, materials such as yarn and beads, craft blanks that are not intended to be used without further crafting, and craft kits as examples.
Etsy’s Help Center article on craft and party supplies lists allowed supplies by craft, and the table below shows a sample of its categories.
| Craft | Examples Etsy allows |
|---|---|
| Textile crafts | Yarn, thread, fabric, needles, crochet hooks, embroidery hoops, patterns |
| Jewelry making | Beads, charms, findings, pliers, wire cutters, metal stamps |
| Wood crafts | Unfinished wood blanks, craft saws, sandpaper, wood craft glue, stains |
| Candle and soap making | Wax, fragrance oils, soap bases, molds |
| Painting and drawing | Brushes, canvas, paints, sketch pads, pastels |
| Clay and ceramics | Clay, sculpting tools, glazes, slab rollers |
| Resin and casting | Resin, hardener, molds, colorants, safety equipment |
The same article lists what does not qualify. Items usable as is without additional crafting do not qualify, even if they could be used for crafting. Plain tumblers, phone cases, t-shirts and canvas bags are given as examples. Home DIY supplies, office supplies, general construction tools and materials, and generic cooking tools are excluded, while specialized art and craft tools geared toward small scale or hobby work are allowed.
Party supplies
Party supplies are items whose primary purpose is decorating a special event to give it a unique or personal look. Etsy’s examples are festive table decorations, balloons and streamers, and gift wrap. Generic resold items that may be used at a party but are not decor, or that have everyday uses, do not qualify. The Creativity Standards list plain furniture, generic tableware, stage lights, speakers, costumes, party favors and seasonal decor not specific to one gathering among them.
Gift baskets
Gift baskets must have a clear theme that ties together a variety of different types of items individually selected by the seller. Generic concepts such as “candy”, “clothes” or “mystery box”, baskets of a single item type in bulk, and baskets from a single commercial brand do not qualify. Every item in the basket must be listed in the description.
Borderline items and how they classify
Most classification questions we get are about items near a line. The table below applies Etsy’s own lists from the Creativity Standards and the craft and party supplies article to the cases we see most.
| Item | Classification | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Cookie cutters, piping bags | Allowed supply | Etsy lists them under baking crafts, for the decorative side of baking |
| Pots, pans, generic kitchen tools | Not allowed | Generic cooking tools are excluded |
| Seeds, soil, compost | Allowed supply | Listed under gardening crafts, subject to Etsy’s plant and seed policies |
| Craft instruction books, new or vintage | Allowed supply | Etsy lists craft books with project instructions |
| Stickers for paper crafting | Allowed supply | Listed under paper crafts |
| Plain stainless tumbler | Not allowed | Usable as a cup without crafting |
| Unfinished wooden round | Allowed supply | A craft blank not meant for use without further crafting |
| Drawer pulls, switch plates | Not allowed | Home DIY supplies are excluded |
| Birthday banner for one event | Allowed party supply | Made to dress up a single celebration, which Etsy counts as event decor |
| Plain plates and cups | Not allowed | Generic tableware has everyday uses |
| Retro style lamp made recently | Not allowed as vintage | Newer than 20 years, even though it looks vintage |
Dating a vintage item step by step
Etsy may ask for documentation of a vintage item’s source, age, designer or materials. A dating routine means you already have the answer.
- Look for marks. Maker marks, hallmarks, labels, tags, patent or registration numbers and union labels often point to a period.
- Check construction. Fasteners, stitching, zippers, joinery, glazes and materials changed over time and can support a date range.
- Find a reference. A period catalog page, advertisement or reference book entry showing the same item is strong support.
- Record provenance. Note where and when you bought the item, and keep the receipt or lot record.
- Write the estimate. Record the decade and the reasons, and photograph the evidence.
- Apply the line. If the earliest supported date is less than 20 years ago, or the date cannot be supported, do not list the item as vintage.

Controls to Set Up Before You Sell
We install five controls in shops that sell vintage, supplies or gift baskets. Together they move the category decision from instinct to a written, checkable step.
1. A written classification test
Write one test per category, using Etsy’s wording, and run every product through it. For supplies, is the primary purpose creating a new item by hand, and can the buyer not use it as is? For party supplies, is the primary purpose decorating a special event? For vintage, is it at least 20 years old, with evidence? For gift baskets, is there a clear theme, mixed item types, all listed? If no test passes, the product does not go on Etsy.
2. An approved product list
Keep a list of product types already cleared through the test, with the category and the reason. New products not on the list go through the test first. This stops a supply shop from drifting into finished goods one product at a time.
3. A vintage dating step
No vintage item is listed until someone has recorded its estimated date and the evidence, such as maker marks, labels, patent numbers, period catalog pages, construction details or purchase provenance. Photograph the evidence and file it with the listing ID.
4. A supplier screen
Record what each supplier sells you. Raw materials and specialized craft tools are fine. Finished consumer goods, ready to use blanks and white label products are a reselling risk. Etsy’s production partner article names five sources that are not production partners for finished goods. They are white label manufacturers, original equipment manufacturers (OEM), original design manufacturers (ODM), commercial retailers and wholesalers.
5. A pre-launch sign off
One named person confirms the category, the reason and the evidence before each listing goes live, and logs it.
Pre-launch reselling removals control checklist for Etsy
- Category recorded as craft supply, party supply, vintage, gift basket, or made or designed by us.
- For a supply, the primary purpose is crafting, and the item cannot be used as is.
- For a supply, it is not a home DIY, office, construction, gardening tool, cosmetic or generic cooking item.
- For a party supply, the primary purpose is event decor, with no everyday use.
- For vintage, it is 20 or more years old, with dated evidence photographed and filed.
- For a gift basket, there is a clear theme, different item types, and every item listed in the description.
- No card, tag or note added to an unaltered commercial item as the only change.
- Supplier is a source of materials or vintage stock, and not a seller of finished goods for resale.
- Photos show the real item for sale, as Etsy requires for handpicked items.
- Checked by (name) and date.
Business Models and How to Run Them Compliantly
Vintage dealers
Vintage shops buy estate lots, auction lots and collections that mix eras. The risk is listing everything in a lot as vintage because most of it is. Run the model by dating each item separately, keeping the evidence, and moving anything under 20 years or of unknown age to another channel. Watch for reproductions, which are common in decor, jewelry and signage.
Craft supply shops
Supply shops are allowed to resell, which invites scope creep. Finished jewelry appears beside beads. Plain tumblers appear beside vinyl. Generic kitchen tools appear beside cake decorating supplies. Each addition fails the supply test. Run the model by keeping the approved product list and testing each new item against Etsy’s craft supply article before it is listed.
Sublimation and blank sellers
Shops that sell blanks for decorators face the sharpest line. Etsy allows craft blanks that are not intended to be used without further crafting and excludes blanks that are ready to use. A plain tumbler, t-shirt or phone case is usable as is, so it fails. Run the model by selling only blanks that genuinely need crafting, or by decorating the blanks yourself with your own designs and listing them as your work.
Party and event shops
Event shops sell decor, which qualifies, and are tempted to add tableware, costumes, lights and favors, which mostly do not. Run the model by keeping each listing tied to decorating a specific kind of event, and by leaving everyday goods off Etsy.
Gift basket shops
Basket shops qualify when each basket is a curated, themed set of different items. They fail when baskets become a single product type, a single brand, or a mystery box. Run the model by documenting each basket’s theme and components and listing every item.
A composite example
This example is a composite of patterns we see across many shops and describes no single client. A shop sold mid century homewares sourced from estate sales. Over time the owner added items from a retro reproduction supplier because they sold well and matched the look. A review removed fifteen listings. The genuine pieces had been dated by eye, with no evidence filed. We helped the owner separate the reproductions, which came off Etsy, and photograph maker marks and labels for the genuine pieces. A dating step and supplier screen went into the listing workflow. The appeals for genuine vintage were built on that evidence. The new controls stopped the reproductions from coming back.
Weekly and Monthly Reselling Removals Checks
The checks below keep the catalog inside the definitions as it grows. They take about twenty minutes a week and an hour a month.
Weekly
- Open the Policy violations page in Shop Manager and record any new removal with date and policy.
- Review every listing created in the past week against the pre-launch checklist.
- Check new supplier orders for any finished goods or ready to use blanks.
- Check email, including spam, for messages from Etsy about listings or requests for vintage documentation.
Monthly
- Sample at least ten live listings, or 10% of the catalog, and re-run the classification test.
- Re-check vintage items with dates close to the 20 year line and confirm the evidence is filed.
- Update the approved product list with any new product types cleared this month.
- Record findings and fixes in the audit log.
Before any new product, supplier or campaign
Run the full test on the new product or every product from the new supplier. Before a promotion, check the listings it will feature, since promoted listings are the ones most likely to be seen.

Records to Keep in Case Etsy Reviews You
If Etsy asks about a vintage item or removes a listing that does qualify, your records decide how quickly and how well you can answer. Etsy’s Help Center states that a Creativity Standards appeal can include up to 12 photos, videos or documents, that photos and documents must be larger than 120KB, and that videos must be 3 minutes or less. For handpicked items it suggests images or video of your stock and packaging. For sourced items it suggests documents or video showing how and where you source supplies. Unless Etsy states otherwise, you have up to 6 months from the removal to appeal. Once an appeal is denied, you cannot file another for the same listing. Etsy says most reviews finish within 3 days and some take 10 to 12 business days.
- Vintage age evidence. Photos of marks, labels and construction, period references, and the date estimate.
- Provenance. Estate sale, auction or collection purchase records for vintage stock.
- Supplier invoices showing what kind of goods each supplier sells you.
- Supply classification notes. The test result and reason for each product type.
- Gift basket records. The theme, the component list and photos of assembly and packaging.
- Listing change history. Category changes and who made them.
- Customer messages about an item’s age or use.
File records by listing ID so you can respond within a day. Our method for reselling cases rests on the position that the items qualify as vintage of 20 years or more, genuine craft supplies or made items, and sit outside prohibited reselling. The root cause names the classification error or vintage age question. The corrective action recategorizes or removes listings and documents age or sourcing. The preventive action is the classification procedure above. The evidence is the records in this list.
First removal compared with repeat removals
Etsy does not publish a tier system for reselling removals. A first removal, followed by a catalog sweep, usually stays a listing matter. Repeat removals for the same product type show a reviewer that the sourcing has not changed, and Etsy states that non-qualifying sourcing and multiple violations can lead to suspension. For the full rules and what happens to removed listings, see our guide to the Etsy reselling violation.
Training Staff and Partners on Etsy Rules
- Give everyone who lists products a one page summary of the three reselling exceptions in Etsy’s own words.
- Train buyers who source vintage on dating methods and on recognizing reproductions.
- Make the classification test a required step in the listing workflow, with sign off.
- Limit publishing rights to trained staff.
- Tell suppliers what you can and cannot sell on Etsy, so they do not ship finished goods in a supply order.
- Review a sample of each new team member’s listings during their first month.
Write the procedure down with owners, dates and where records are kept. If Etsy ever asks what has changed, the procedure and its logs are your preventive evidence.
The broader category rules are covered in our guide to Etsy Creativity Standards. Other common removal reasons are covered in our guides on misleading listings, medical claims, dangerous and recalled items and hateful and discriminatory items.
Regional Differences and the Law
Etsy’s reselling rules are stricter than the law in most places, and on Etsy they decide. The law matters for how you describe items, especially their age, and for the formal routes some sellers have to contest a decision. None of these statutes override Etsy’s category definitions, and a lawyer licensed where you trade should read any dispute that turns on them.
| Region | Law | Relevance |
|---|---|---|
| United States | FTC Act, Section 5, 15 U.S.C. 45 | Describing a reproduction as vintage, or overstating age, can be a deceptive practice. |
| United States | 17 U.S.C. 109 | The first sale doctrine lets owners resell lawfully made copies in general. It gives no right to resell on Etsy. |
| European Union | Directive 2005/29/EC | Misleading statements about a product’s age, history or origin can be unfair commercial practices. |
| European Union | Regulation (EU) 2022/2065 (Digital Services Act), Articles 17, 20 and 21 | For EU stores, a removal comes with a statement of reasons, internal complaint handling open for at least 6 months, and out of court settlement. |
| United Kingdom | Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 | UK unfair trading rules on misleading actions and omissions. |
| United Kingdom | Retained Regulation (EU) 2019/1150, Article 4 | A statement of reasons when a platform restricts a UK business user’s listings or account. |
Accurate classification and honest age claims satisfy Etsy and the consumer protection rules at the same time. In the EU and UK, the legal routes are useful where you believe Etsy misread an item that qualifies.
Frequently Asked Questions
How old does an item have to be to sell as vintage on Etsy?
At least 20 years old. Items newer than 20 years do not qualify as vintage even if they are styled to look vintage, and Etsy may ask for documentation of an item’s source, age, designer or materials.
What is the main control that prevents reselling removals on Etsy?
List only items you make, design, handpick or source under the standards, and list vintage only at 20 years or older. Back it with a written classification test that a named person runs before every listing goes live.
How often should I audit for reselling removals on Etsy?
Weekly for new listings and supplier orders, and monthly for a sample of the full catalog. Run the full test again before any new product, supplier or campaign goes live.
Which records prove an Etsy item is genuine vintage or a true supply?
Keep vintage age evidence and provenance, supplier invoices, classification notes, gift basket component records, listing change history and relevant customer messages for each product. File them by listing ID so you can send them within a day.
What happens if Etsy finds reselling anyway?
Etsy removes the listings, and you still owe the fees for listing them. Removed listings appear on the Policy violations page, where an appeal may be available for up to 6 months for items that qualify. Repeated violations can lead to account suspension.
