Answering Source of Funds on a Limited Revolut Business Account

By October 19, 2026November 2nd, 2026No Comments26 min read

A Revolut source of funds limit means Revolut Business has restricted the account until it receives overdue information, verifies where money came from, or finishes an identity check. The cause is usually one specific gap in the file. Revolut’s help page My account has been limited lists the effect. Money transfers, card payments, Merchant actions and currency exchanges can all be restricted. Revolut says it will review and verify your information within 15 business days. A transfer reverted during the limit goes back to the sender, and Revolut says the money should reach them within 10 business days. Once the limit lifts, the sender has to pay you again. The trigger is usually missing information, with no finding made against the business. The way out is to answer every item in the Information request tile with a document that traces the money.

The 15 business day review only moves once the file is complete. A business that answers half the request on day one and the rest on day nine has given the reviewer nothing to close for nine days. We answer every item the same day it arrives, and we prepare the paperwork for large payments before the money lands, so a big invoice paid by a new client never turns into a frozen operating account.

Why Revolut Limits Accounts

Revolut gives three reasons for limiting a Business account. Requested information was not provided in time. Source of funds is unverified. Or an identity check is ongoing. Each one is a gap in what Revolut knows about the business or its money, and each one is closed by information.

The position in our method is that the business’s identity and source of funds are genuine and fully documentable. The root cause is always one specific gap, an overdue information request, an unverified source of funds, or an identity check on a director or owner. Identify which gap applies before you respond, because each needs different documents.

GapWhat Revolut needsWhat closes it
Overdue information requestAnswers it already asked forComplete answers to every item
Unverified source of fundsProof of where money came fromContracts, invoices, sale agreements, statements
Ongoing identity checkVerified identity of a director or ownerIdentity documents for that person

Why these checks exist

Revolut’s UK, EEA and US entities all apply anti-money-laundering rules. The EU and UK texts name source of funds directly, in close to identical wording. The firm must scrutinize transactions across the relationship and check, where necessary, the source of funds. Treat a request as a compliance step the firm is legally required to take, and spend your energy on the documents rather than on whether the question should have been asked. We describe these laws as background and do not give legal advice.

In the EU, the text of Regulation (EU) 2024/1624 states in Article 90 that it applies from 10 July 2027, with a later date of 10 July 2029 for two narrow categories of obliged entity. Until then, Directive (EU) 2015/849 as implemented in each member state governs. In the UK, regulation 28 of the Money Laundering Regulations 2017 sets the customer due diligence duty, and paragraph (11)(b) adds a duty to keep those documents up to date. That second duty explains why an established account can be asked for fresh paperwork. Under regulation 82 of the Payment Services Regulations 2017, a provider that refuses a payment order must tell the user and, where possible, give the reasons and the procedure for correcting any factual errors. In the US, the purpose clause of the Bank Secrecy Act at 31 U.S.C. 5311 calls for risk-based programs against money laundering, and the customer due diligence rule at 31 CFR 1010.230 defines who counts as a beneficial owner.

Identity checks on directors and owners

The third reason, an ongoing identity check, often catches businesses that have done nothing new with their money. Revolut checks the identity of the people behind the business, and a check can open when a new person is added, when existing records need refreshing, or when details on file no longer match. While the check runs, the account can be limited. Our rule is to complete identity checks for every director and owner before anyone asks twice. Each person named on the account should be ready to provide clear, current identity documents when asked, and the business should chase anyone who has not yet done so.

Business models that trigger limits

Businesses receiving large incoming transfers from new sources. A first payment from a new client, an investment, a loan drawdown or the proceeds of an asset sale can each be far larger than the account’s usual activity. Revolut asks where it came from. A business that cannot show the contract, invoice or agreement behind it promptly will see the account limited.

Businesses with new directors or owners. When a director joins or ownership changes, Revolut needs to verify the new person’s identity. Under the US rule at 31 CFR 1010.230, anyone holding 25 percent or more of the equity counts as a beneficial owner, so a new investor crossing that line needs verifying too. Until that check completes, the account can be limited. Our guide to Revolut Business KYB and beneficial owner verification covers that process in detail.

Businesses that missed an earlier information request. A request that sat unanswered in the app, perhaps because the person who usually handles Revolut was away, becomes overdue. Revolut’s help page lists that as a reason to limit the account.

How each model operates cleanly

Businesses expecting large transfers. Treat every unusually large incoming payment as a document task that starts before the money arrives. When a deal is signed, file the contract. When an invoice is issued, file it with the expected payment date. When an investor commits, file the signed agreement. The day the money lands, the source of funds file already exists.

Businesses changing directors or owners. Plan the change as a two-part event, the legal change at the company registry and the update to Revolut. Collect the new person’s identity documents and proof of address before the appointment takes effect, report the change in the app, and complete their check promptly. An identity check that finishes in a day rarely limits anything.

Businesses that have missed requests before. Fix the handover problem. Make sure notifications reach a named owner and a deputy, set a daily habit of opening the app, and keep a simple log of every request and the date it was answered. A business that once missed a request has every reason to make sure it never happens twice.

Information Requests and Deadlines

Revolut asks for information through a tile on the Home screen of the app. Open it and you see what is requested, the current status of the request, and the time remaining to provide the information. When information is not provided in that time, Revolut can limit the account. Revolut’s source of funds help page goes further and warns that failing to provide the information may lead to the account being limited or closed under its terms. The prevention habit is short. Keep source of funds records current and answer every request within the time shown on the tile.

Two details catch businesses out. Some requests are visible only to the account owner, so a finance manager logged in as a team member may never see the tile. And if no tile has appeared, Revolut says there is nothing to submit. The account is under review and an update will follow.

Revolut Business account limited: source of funds information requests, stated deadlines and partial answers
Open each request in the Information request tile to see what Revolut wants by its stated deadline and how to answer when items take time.

The deadline is the one shown in your request. Revolut does not publish a single deadline for every request, so read yours and write it down the day the request arrives. If you cannot meet it, Revolut’s own instruction is to upload what you have with a detailed explanation in the description. Say which items are still coming and the date each will follow.

Reading the request

Open the tile and list every item it asks for. Some requests ask a single question about one transfer. Others ask for documents on several transfers and identity documents for more than one person. Treat each item as a line on a checklist. The rule in our method is to answer every item requested, since a partial answer restarts the review.

When you cannot meet the deadline

Some documents take time. A lender may need days to issue a statement, or a director may be travelling without their passport. Do not let the deadline pass in silence. Send every item you already have, list the items still outstanding, explain briefly why each is delayed and give the date you expect to send it. Then send it on that date. A reviewer can work with a business that is visibly completing the file. A request that goes quiet is the one that turns into a limit.

Who should own the response

Assign one person in the business to own Revolut requests and to check the app regularly. Missed requests are almost always a handover problem, because notifications went to someone who left, someone on holiday, or a shared login nobody watches. Give the owner the authority to gather documents from finance and the directors, and a deputy for when they are away.

Answer the same day

Answer the tile the day it appears. Every day a request sits unanswered is a day added before the 15 business day review can finish, and the request carries its own countdown on top of that. Revolut wants all communication about the request kept inside the tile, which also gives you a dated record of what you sent. If the limit has also stopped money leaving a Merchant account, our walkthrough on blocked Revolut Merchant withdrawals covers that side.

Revolut Source of Funds Verification

Source of funds means where a specific amount of money came from. Revolut asks because it needs to see that money entering the account has a legitimate, documented origin. The answer is a document trail that links the money to its source.

Revolut lists what it may ask for. Its business source of funds page names contracts or invoices with your business partners, tax statements, and information about your shareholders’ source of wealth. It sets four plain requirements. The document name must match the Revolut Business account. The information must be accurate and current. Contracts must be signed and dated, with names, addresses and amounts fully visible. And documents must be clear, uncropped PDFs or photos of physical documents, because screenshots are not accepted.

For a large payment you know is coming, Revolut runs a pre-notice route. Its page on speeding up an incoming large transfer lets you submit documents through a form before the money arrives. The list there is specific. An invoice should show purpose, customer name, invoice date, the goods or services, payment terms and amount. A funding agreement should show purpose, investor name, date, payment schedule, rights and signatures. Money moved from your own account at another bank needs a 3-month bank statement showing the bank name and customer name. A refund needs the confirmation letter or receipt with the reason, amount, date and any VAT.

Source of funds evidence checklist
  • Payment from a customer. The invoice, the contract or order, and proof of delivery or completion
  • Investment into the company. The signed investment or share subscription agreement and the investor’s details
  • Loan. The signed loan agreement and the lender’s details
  • Sale of an asset. The sale agreement, proof of ownership before the sale and the buyer’s details
  • Transfer from another company account. The statement from the sending account showing the outgoing transfer
  • Transfer from a director or owner. The personal statement showing the transfer, and where that money came from if asked
  • Grant or refund from a public body. The award letter or notice
  • Every document should be genuine, unaltered, legible, and showing names and amounts that match the transfer

Documents that do not work

Some documents look helpful and add nothing. A screenshot is refused outright under Revolut’s upload rules, and a cropped photo of a statement with the account holder name cut off cannot be tied to anyone. An unsigned draft contract does not show an agreement was made. An invoice issued after the payment arrived, with no earlier record of the work, raises more questions than it answers. A letter from the business describing the payment is an explanation, and it still needs a document behind it. Send official statements, signed agreements and invoices issued in the normal course of business, and the reviewer can work with them.

Matching documents to transfers

Each document should answer one transfer. Label it with the transfer date, amount and sender as they appear in your Revolut account. If the amount on the invoice differs from the amount received, for example because of fees or partial payment, explain the difference in one sentence. A reviewer who can match document to transfer without working it out closes the item quickly.

A worked example

A small engineering consultancy received its largest ever payment from a new client abroad. Revolut asked for source of funds within days. The consultancy sent the signed service contract, the invoice matching the amount received, the client’s company details, and the email in which the client confirmed the work was complete. It labeled each document with the transfer reference. The answer showed the money’s origin from contract to payment, leaving no gap for a follow-up question.

When Revolut asks about the money behind the money

Sometimes the first answer leads to a second question. A director lends the company a large sum, and Revolut asks where the director’s money came from. A parent company transfers funds, and Revolut asks about the parent’s revenue. These follow-ups are normal when the first source is itself a person or entity moving money. Answer them the same way, with one document per link in the chain, such as the director’s personal statement showing the money before it moved, or the parent’s invoice or account statement. Stop at the point where the money’s origin is an ordinary business or personal source, such as trading income, salary, a sale or a loan from a lender.

How a reviewer reads source of funds

We understand how compliance reviewers assess these files. They check that the documents are genuine, that the names on them match the sender and the business, that the amounts reconcile, and that the explanation fits the business’s declared activity. A payment from a customer for work the business normally does, backed by a contract and an invoice, reads as ordinary. A payment with no document, or with documents that do not match the sender or the amount, prompts more questions. Our dedicated guide to Revolut Business source of funds goes deeper on specific transfer types.

A source of funds limit is different from a freeze ordered by a court or a public authority, where Revolut may be unable to tell you much at all. If a third party order sits behind the restriction, read our breakdown of Revolut funds frozen by a court or authority request.

What Is Restricted

Revolut’s help page lists what a limit can restrict, which is transfers, card payments, merchant actions and exchanges. In practice that can stop the business from paying suppliers, using its cards, operating its Merchant account and converting currency, all at once.

The effect on each area

  • Transfers. Outgoing payments to suppliers, staff and other accounts may not go through. Incoming transfers may be returned.
  • Card payments. Company cards may stop working for purchases.
  • Merchant actions. Card acceptance and Merchant account functions may be restricted.
  • Exchanges. Currency conversion inside the account may be blocked.

Returned transfers

Transfers sent to the account during the limit can be returned to the payer. Revolut’s help page is clear that returned transfers must be resent by the payer. The money does not wait in the account for the limit to lift. It goes back to whoever sent it. Revolut tells you to let the sender know, and says the money should reach their account within 10 business days. Once the limit lifts, you ask the sender to transfer it again. A customer who paid on day two of a limit may not see the refund until day twelve, and then has to pay a second time.

Payer resend notice template

Use this as a starting point and adjust it to your relationship with the payer. Send it after the limit has lifted, or let payers know in advance that a resend may be needed.

  1. Subject line reads “Payment returned, please resend”
  2. Open with “Thank you for your payment of the amount on the date you sent it.”
  3. State the fact, “Our account was temporarily limited and your transfer was returned to you.”
  4. Give the status, “The limit has now been lifted and our account details are unchanged.”
  5. Make the ask, “Please resend the payment to the same account details, using the same reference.”
  6. Add a check, “Please confirm the returned amount has reached your account before resending.”
  7. Close with “Contact us directly if you have any questions, and thank you for your patience.”

Keep the notice factual. Do not speculate about the reason for the limit or share details of Revolut’s review.

Telling staff and suppliers

If a limit stops outgoing payments, the people you pay will notice. Tell key suppliers and staff early that a payment may be delayed, give them a realistic date when you know one, and pay urgent obligations from another business account if you have one. Keep the message factual and short, and leave the review itself out of it. A clear message protects relationships while the review runs.

Planning around a limit

A limit can affect the whole operating account, so plan for it before it happens. Keep enough working capital accessible elsewhere to cover payroll and necessary suppliers for a few weeks. Know which payers are due to send large amounts, so you can warn them if a limit is in place. Keep a list of standing payments that may fail, so you can arrange alternatives quickly.

The 15 Business Day Review

Revolut’s help page states that it reviews a limited account within 15 business days. The account stays limited until that review. The review starts moving once Revolut has what it needs, which is why our method answers each item the same day.

Revolut Business account limited timeline: complete the file, 15 business day review, follow-up and formal complaint
Follow a limited Revolut account from the first submission through the 15 business day review to the complaint route if it runs over.

Count in business days, which excludes weekends and public holidays, and count from the point your file is complete. Keep a dated record of when you submitted each item. If Revolut comes back with a follow-up, note that date too, because a partial answer restarts the review.

Keeping a submission log

A simple log makes the review measurable. Record each item Revolut asked for, the date you sent it, what you sent and any reply. Mark the date your file became complete, because that is when the 15 business day review can genuinely run. If Revolut asks a follow-up, add it to the log with the date you answered. The log turns a vague sense that the review is taking too long into a dated record you can rely on if you need to follow up or complain.

What a follow-up message looks like

A good follow-up is short. It states the date the limit started, the date your file was complete, the items you submitted and the number of business days since. It confirms you have answered every item. It asks for the review outcome or for any further information Revolut still needs. It does not argue, threaten or describe hardship. Send it in the same in-app thread so it sits beside the request and your answers.

First-time and repeat limits

Revolut does not publish tiers for account limits. The account stays limited until the review, within 15 business days, whether this is a first limit or a later one. A repeat limit usually means a pattern, such as requests that keep going unanswered, or large transfers that keep arriving without documents. Fixing the pattern is the way to stop the repeats.

When the review runs past its timeline

Revolut’s page adds a caveat to the 15 business days. Depending on the case, it may not be able to give expected response times. If 15 business days have passed since your file was complete, send a short message in the tile listing what you submitted and when, and ask for the outcome. If that does not move it, file a formal complaint.

Revolut’s business complaints page accepts complaints through an online form or by email. Include the business name, the company registration number, your full name, the phone number and email on the account, what happened, the date the problem started and the resolution you want. Revolut sends a written acknowledgement with an estimated resolution timeframe. If you are still unhappy with its answer, you can go to the external dispute resolution authority for the Revolut entity that serves you.

For UK payment and e-money complaints, the FCA Handbook rules in DISP 1.6 set the clock. The firm must send a final response within 15 business days of receiving the complaint. In exceptional circumstances it may send a holding response within 15 business days and a final response within 35 business days. Other complaints run on 8 weeks. Our guide to Revolut Business complaints and the ombudsman covers the escalation in detail. Keep every step in writing.

Related limits

Account limits overlap with other Revolut restrictions. If the limit came from an identity reverification, our guide to Revolut Business identity and KYC reverification explains that process. If incoming transfers are being sent back, see our guide to Revolut incoming transfers reverted. For a wider view of this restriction, see our guide to a limited Revolut Business account.

What Never to Do and the Source of Funds Routine

The preventive step in our method is current records for every director and owner and documents prepared for large incoming transfers. Most limits we see could have been avoided with those two habits.

What never to do

  • Never leave an information request unanswered. An overdue request is a stated reason to limit the account.
  • Never send a partial answer without saying what is still to come. A partial answer restarts the review.
  • Never send altered or reconstructed documents. Send genuine documents only.
  • Never ask payers to send money to another account to avoid the limit. It can look like evasion.
  • Never accept a large transfer you cannot document. Get the paperwork before the money arrives.
  • Never add a director or owner without preparing their identity documents. Their check can limit the account.
  • Never answer outside the app. Keep everything in the Information request tile.

The source of funds routine

  1. Before a large transfer arrives. Collect the contract, invoice or agreement and file it with the expected amount and sender.
  2. When it arrives. Label the documents with the transfer reference and keep them ready.
  3. Before a director or owner joins. Collect their identity documents and proof of address so their check can complete quickly.
  4. Daily. The owner of Revolut requests checks the app for new tiles.
  5. When a request arrives. List every item, note the deadline, answer every item the same day with a document.
  6. After the limit lifts. Send resend notices to any payers whose transfers were returned.
  7. Quarterly. Confirm director and owner records in the app are current.

When the account is still limited after 15 business days and payers are seeing returned transfers, our Revolut Business funds and restriction service prepares a complete source of funds response and the formal follow-up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my Revolut Business account limited?

Requested information was not provided in time, source of funds is unverified, or an identity check is ongoing. Check the Information request tile to see which applies. Each gap is closed by specific documents.

What does a Revolut limit restrict?

A limit can restrict transfers, card payments, merchant actions and exchanges. That can stop supplier payments, company card use, card acceptance and currency conversion at once. Plan working capital elsewhere so a limit does not stop operations.

How long does a Revolut review take?

Revolut says it will review and verify your information within 15 business days, though some cases take longer. The review moves once your file is complete, so answer every item the same day. If it runs past that time, follow up in the app and then use the formal complaint route.

What happens to transfers returned during a limit?

The money goes back to the sender, and Revolut says it should arrive within 10 business days. Nothing waits in your account. Ask each affected payer to send it again once the limit lifts.

How do I prove source of funds to Revolut?

Upload signed and dated contracts, invoices or official statements that trace the money, as PDFs or clear photos, never screenshots. The name on each document must match the Revolut Business account. Match each one to the transfer by date, amount and sender, and label it with the transfer reference.

Why can’t I see the Revolut information request?

Some requests are visible only to the account owner, so team members may not see the tile. Ask the owner to open the Home screen. If no tile appears for anyone, Revolut says nothing is needed while it reviews the account.

Get Help With Revolut Account Limits

Many limits lift quickly once the business answers every item with a document. Bring it to us when the account is still limited after 15 business days, when payers are seeing returned transfers and the business is losing income, or when the source of funds trail is complex, such as an investment, a loan or an asset sale. We map each request item to the right document, trace each transfer from origin to account, prepare the response for the Information request tile, and handle the formal follow-up if the review overruns. We cannot promise when a limit will lift, and we never claim access to Revolut’s internal files. We understand how these reviews are run and decided, and we prepare the file for that review.

Start with our Revolut Business funds and restriction service, or book a free assessment consultation to go through the request with us.

If the Revolut limit sits alongside a reserve, a processor hold or a marketplace payout freeze, our disbursement and funds release desk handles those cases together.
