A Walmart return rate above 6 percent, or above 9 percent for Resold inventory, means too many items from the past 60 days came back for reasons Walmart treats as your fault, which are defective, damaged, incorrect item or arrived late. Walmart’s standards state that a seller who misses a performance standard must take immediate action, and that failing to improve may lead to suppression, suspension or termination. The warning stage is the time to find the cause, because the cause is almost always narrower than the number suggests. In most stores two or three SKUs produce most of the seller fault returns, and each traces to a listing that does not match the product, a lot with a defect, or packaging that fails in transit. For the full background on the metric, read our parent guide to the high Walmart return rate.
How Walmart Counts Seller Fault Returns
Walmart’s Return Rate guide defines the metric as the percentage of items in the past 60 days returned by the customer due to the seller’s fault. The guide lists four drivers that make a return count.
- Defective. The item does not work properly or has a manufacturer’s defect, such as missing parts or quality issues.
- Damaged. The item arrived broken, leaking or visibly damaged.
- Incorrect item. The customer received an item different from what was ordered.
- Arrived late. The item was delivered after the Expected Delivery Date.
The Seller Performance Standards overview describes the same metric as the rate of orders delivered in the past 60 days that were returned by the customer. We work from the dedicated guide’s seller fault definition, because it matches the drivers Walmart lists and because it tells you which returns to investigate.
What a 60 day window means during a warning
The window rolls forward every day. Seller fault returns from items shipped up to 60 days ago stay in the number, and returns for items shipped this week will land in it over the coming weeks. Two consequences follow. A fix you make today will not lower the rate for some time, and items still in transit from a bad lot can push the rate higher even after you stop shipping that lot. Tell your team to expect that lag so nobody abandons a correct fix because the number did not move in a week.
Returns Walmart may not count as seller fault
Customers return items for many reasons. Walmart’s returns policy requires you to accept eligible returns regardless of the reason, but only the four drivers above are described as seller fault in the Return Rate guide. Separating them from preference returns is the first diagnostic step. It is also where most appeals we review fall short. A plan that says “returns were high” gives a reviewer nothing to check. A plan that names the SKUs and drivers behind the seller fault share does.

What a Walmart Return Rate Above 6 Percent Puts at Risk
Walmart requires a Return Rate less than or equal to 6 percent for most inventory and 9 percent or below for Resold inventory. If the warning shows you above either line, the account is out of standard on that metric. Walmart last updated the Return Rate guide and the Seller Performance Standards overview on July 28, 2026, and the status policy on October 2, 2026, so read the live pages before you quote them in an appeal.
Walmart’s Seller Performance Standards overview states that when performance falls short, Walmart notifies you by email and in Seller Center with recommendations, and that you cannot unsubscribe from those notifications. It states that failure to take immediate action may result in suppression, suspension or termination. Walmart’s status policy describes each step. Suppression makes seller-fulfilled listings non-transactable, suspension makes all listings non-transactable and non-discoverable with payments on hold, and termination permanently revokes selling privileges.
Walmart does not publish how long a seller can stay above the standard before each step. Treat the time between the warning and any enforcement notice as an open fix window of unknown length, and use it.
Triage in the First Week
The first week sets up everything that follows. The aim is to stop new seller fault returns at the source and to start the record you may need later.
Walmart return rate warning triage checklist
- What the notice names. The metric, the rate shown, the date and any recommendation Walmart gave. Save the email and a screenshot of the Performance dashboard.
- The deadline. Walmart may not state one. Record any date the notice gives and treat the warning date as day one of your fix window.
- The return data. Export the returned orders for the past 60 days and the units shipped by SKU for the same period.
- The driver split. Tag each return defective, damaged, incorrect item, arrived late or other.
- The top SKUs. Rank SKUs by seller fault returns. Mark the top three for immediate inspection.
- Inventory on hand. Identify the lots of the top SKUs still in stock and still in transit to customers.
- The evidence to gather. Customer comments, inspection photos, the current listing pages and the packaging used.
Decisions to make by the end of the week
- Hold or keep selling each top SKU. If inspection confirms a defect in the current lot, set that inventory to unavailable until the cause is fixed. A few lost sales cost less than a rate that keeps rising.
- Correct any listing that does not match the product. Listing errors can be fixed the same day and stop new incorrect item returns immediately.
- Change packaging on any SKU with a damaged cluster. Use stronger packaging now and test it properly over the following weeks.
- Review carrier service for arrived late returns. If one service level is behind most late arrivals, change it.
First warning compared with repeat
A first warning caused by one SKU is usually contained within a few weeks of the fix. A repeat warning, or a rate that drops and climbs again, shows Walmart the cause was missed or the fix did not hold. On a repeat, widen the review to every SKU with any seller fault return and audit your inspection process, because the problem is now in the system that lets bad stock or bad listings reach customers.
Return Reasons That Point to the Listing
Many returns that customers tag as incorrect item or defective are listing problems. The product works and matches its specification. The listing described something else.
Signals in the return data
- Incorrect item returns on a SKU you picked correctly. The customer received what you shipped, and what you shipped is what the listing should have shown.
- Comments about size, color or quantity. “Smaller than expected,” “not the color in the photo” and “only three in the pack” all point at listing content.
- Defective returns with comments about compatibility. “Does not fit my model” usually means the compatibility information is incomplete.
- Returns concentrated on one variant. A single size or color in a variant group with a cluster of returns often has a wrong image or attribute.
The listing audit
Take one unit of the affected SKU and compare it, attribute by attribute, with the live listing on Walmart.com.
- Title. Does it name the product, quantity and size the customer receives?
- Images. Does every image show this exact product, in this color, with these components?
- Dimensions and weight. Measured from the product itself, not the shipping box.
- Materials and finish. Stated accurately, including what is plastic and what is metal.
- Pack count and included parts. Matches what is in the box.
- Compatibility. Lists the models it fits and the ones it does not.
- Variant mapping and UPC. Walmart recommends confirming UPCs are correctly associated with the appropriate products.
Write down every mismatch you find and the date you corrected it. Walmart’s Code of Conduct lists providing misleading or inaccurate item information to Walmart or the customer as an unfair activity, so an inaccurate listing carries a policy risk beyond the return rate.
Product and Packaging Fixes
Defective returns
When returns cluster on one lot with defect comments, the fix runs through inventory and the manufacturer. Walmart’s Return Rate guide recommends inspecting inventory to make sure all parts are included as advertised, verifying product quality matches what is displayed on Walmart.com, and working with manufacturers to address recurring defects. Run the work in this order.
- Inspect a sample of the remaining stock from the affected lot and record the failure rate you find.
- Remove failing units from available inventory.
- Send the manufacturer photos, counts and customer comments, and agree in writing on the correction.
- Inspect the next shipment against a written checklist before listing it as available.
Damaged returns
Walmart recommends sturdy, protective packaging appropriate for the product type and weight, testing packaging to make sure it protects items in transit, and evaluating carrier performance for repeated handling issues. A simple packaging test protocol works for most sellers.
- Pack three units exactly as customers receive them.
- Ship them through the same carrier and service level to addresses at different distances.
- Open each on arrival and photograph the condition.
- Change one variable at a time, such as box strength, insert or void fill, and repeat until all three arrive intact.
Incorrect item returns from the warehouse
When the listing is accurate but customers still receive the wrong item, the error is in picking or packing. Walmart recommends fulfillment quality checks to prevent picking and packing errors. Separate similar SKUs on the shelf, label variants clearly and add a scan or visual check at packing.
Arrived late returns
Review fulfillment lag time, transit settings and carrier service for the SKUs carrying late returns. Walmart recommends reliable carriers with consistent on-time delivery and realistic lag time and transit settings. Our On-Time Delivery Rate guide covers those settings in detail.
How Each Business Model Gets Here
Private label brands
Private label sellers usually reach the warning through a defective lot. One production run with a weak component produces a cluster of defective returns on a single SKU. The fix sits with incoming inspection and the manufacturer, through a written inspection checklist for each shipment, a sample size that catches a failing lot before it is listed, and a written correction from the factory before reorder.
Apparel and home goods sellers
These sellers usually reach the warning through listings. Sizes run differently from the chart, colors read differently on screen, or dimensions were taken from the carton. The fix is the attribute audit above, size charts measured from the actual garment and photos of the product the customer receives.
Resellers of Resold inventory
Walmart sets a 9 percent standard for Resold inventory, which recognizes that condition varies. Returns climb toward that line when grades are optimistic, accessories are missing or cosmetic wear was not shown. The fix is unit-level grading against a written standard, plain descriptions of what is included and photos of actual condition when the unit differs from new.
Fragile goods and late shippers
Sellers of glass, ceramics, electronics and liquids reach the warning through damage in transit, and the packaging protocol above is the fix. Sellers with loose lag times or slow carrier services reach it through arrived late returns, and the fix is realistic settings and a faster service on the affected lanes.
A composite example
Consider a composite apparel seller built for teaching, drawn from no single client. The warning shows a Return Rate of about 8 percent. The SKU split shows most seller fault returns on two styles of jacket, tagged incorrect item, with comments saying the jackets ran a full size small. The size chart on both listings was copied from a different style. The seller replaces the chart with measurements taken from the jackets themselves, adds a note that the style fits small, and photographs the jacket on a measured model. Defective and damaged returns, spread thinly across the catalog, need no change. Over the next 60 days the incorrect item returns on both styles fall away and the store rate returns under 6 percent. The log records the cause, the listing change and the date, which is the evidence a reviewer would expect if the account had been suspended.
Lowering Returns Without Restricting Them
A warning can tempt a seller to make returns harder. Walmart closes that path firmly. Its seller-fulfilled returns policy requires you to accept eligible returns regardless of the customer’s reason and the item’s condition, subject to exceptions such as Final Sale items. You must not negotiate with customers, discourage or delay an eligible return, or otherwise prevent a customer from completing a return. Walmart reserves the right to refund the customer on your behalf if you do not comply, and states that it may suspend or terminate sellers who negotiate alternatives outside its pre-approved options. The Customer Care Policy separately prohibits haggling with customers to avoid a return or refund.
The policy also forbids return shipping charges to customers and limits restocking fees to approved exemption items returned outside original or sellable condition, at up to 20 percent of the item price. A seller who answers a return rate warning by adding friction creates a second, more serious problem. The only lasting fix is fewer reasons for customers to return the item.
Customer Messages During the Fix
A return rate problem produces customer messages before it produces returns. Customers write to say a part is missing, a size is wrong or a box arrived crushed. How those messages are handled affects both the return rate and the Seller Response Rate.
Walmart’s Customer Care Policy requires a high-quality response within 48 hours of receipt, including weekends. Use the replies to learn as well as to resolve. Ask the customer for a photo of the damage or the missing part where it helps you diagnose the cause, offer the remedy Walmart’s rules permit, such as a replacement under your Replacement Rules, and explain how to start a return if the customer prefers one. Never ask the customer to keep the item to avoid a return outside Walmart’s Keep It options, and never discourage the return.
Feed what customers tell you into the tagging worksheet. A customer message that says “the lid was cracked on arrival” arrives days before the return is logged, and it can point you to a packaging problem a week sooner. Our guide to Walmart seller response rate covers the coverage and templates that keep those replies on time.
Monthly Return Review to Prevent a Repeat Warning
Once the first week’s work is done, a monthly review keeps the rate in range and builds the record that protects the account.
- Rank SKUs by seller fault return rate for the last 60 days.
- Review every SKU above your internal threshold. We set it below Walmart’s, such as 4 percent for standard inventory and 7 percent for Resold, so action starts before the account is at risk.
- Record the cause and the action for each flagged SKU, or the decision to discontinue it.
- Audit a sample of listings against the physical product.
- Review damage returns by box type and carrier.
- Confirm returns handling followed Walmart’s policy with no refused eligible returns and no fees outside the policy.
- Record the store Return Rate and the trend.
Corrective action log to keep before an appeal is ever needed
| Date | SKU or area | Cause found | Action taken | Evidence kept |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Warning date | Store | Rate above standard | Return data exported and tagged | Notice, dashboard screenshot, tagged export |
| Week 1 | Top SKU | Defect in current lot | Lot set unavailable, manufacturer notified | Inspection photos, counts, supplier correspondence |
| Week 1 | Second SKU | Listing pack count wrong | Listing corrected | Before and after listing screenshots |
| Weeks 1 to 3 | Fragile SKU | Packaging failure | New packaging tested and adopted | Test parcel photos, packaging specification |
| Monthly | Store | Review completed | Rate and trend recorded | Monthly review sheet |
The week ranges are our internal targets. Walmart does not publish a correction deadline.

Regional Differences
United States
Defective-return clusters can raise warranty questions. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, 15 U.S.C. 2301 et seq., governs written warranties on consumer products, so any warranty your product or listing offers must be stated clearly and honored. Arrived late returns connect to the FTC Mail, Internet, or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule, 16 C.F.R. Part 435, which requires a reasonable basis for stated shipping times and prompt refunds when a buyer’s right to one vests. Where no shipping time is stated, the rule expects shipment within 30 days of a properly completed order, and a cash refund goes out within seven working days. The current text traces to the FTC amendment published at 79 FR 55619 on September 17, 2014.
Canada
Walmart Marketplace Canada does not use the US Return Rate. Its Seller Performance Standards page, last updated April 15, 2026, measures a Refund Rate, the percentage of orders refunded for reasons the seller is responsible for, such as damaged or incorrect items, with a standard of less than 13 percent. A seller suspended for poor performance in Canada submits a Business Plan of Action through a Partner Support case, and Walmart Canada states it will respond within two to five business days.
Mexico
We did not confirm a published return rate standard for Walmart Marketplace Mexico. Sellers there, registered with an RFC through the SAT, should read the standards in their own Seller Center. Consumer rights there fall under the Ley Federal de Protección al Consumidor, which the Chamber of Deputies lists as last reformed in the Diario Oficial on December 12, 2025.
If the Warning Becomes a Suspension
Walmart’s appeal guide, last updated December 9, 2025, asks you to review the Performance page and submit a written business plan of action describing the violation and the corrective steps. Suppression appeals begin from the banner on the Performance page. Suspension appeals go through the Help button in the Seller Center menu bar. Walmart may request current warehouse images or supplier invoices less than two months old, and states that an appeal does not guarantee reinstatement. The same guide states that terminated accounts cannot be appealed, which is why the warning stage matters.
Our plans for return rate cases state the position that returns trace to a specific, corrected cause and current performance is in range. They name the root cause by SKU and list the corrective actions with dates. They describe the monthly SKU-level review and a returns procedure that applies Walmart’s policy consistently, and attach return figures and return reason data by item. The corrective action log from the warning stage supplies most of that evidence.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Walmart return rate standard?
6 percent or below, or 9 percent for Resold inventory. Walmart’s guide states 9 percent or below as the Resold limit.
What period does Walmart use?
The past 60 days. The window rolls forward daily, so returns from a bad lot stay in the number until they age out.
Which returns count?
Items returned due to seller fault. Walmart’s drivers are defective, damaged, incorrect item and arrived late.
What happens above the standard?
Walmart may suppress, suspend or terminate. Its standards require immediate action when a metric falls short and state that failure to improve may lead to those outcomes.
How do I lower returns?
Fix the listing details and product defects behind the return reasons. Tag returns by driver, rank SKUs, correct listings, hold defective lots, improve packaging and keep accepting every eligible return.
Get Help With a Walmart Return Rate Warning
Most warnings resolve once the few SKUs behind them are fixed. When the return driver is in manufacturing, or when Walmart has flagged how returns were handled, the appeal needs more than listing edits, and we help build it. Our Walmart suspension service prepares the plan of action and the evidence. To walk through your return data first, book a consultation.
More Walmart performance guides include Valid Tracking Rate, Cancellation Rate, negative feedback and item not received and Seller Response Rate.
If the Return Rate is still climbing after your first SKU fixes, hand the monthly review to our Walmart return rate monitoring desk. A seller already suspended can open a Walmart case with us, and sellers active on several marketplaces can compare our multi-marketplace reinstatement work.
